According to census records the father of William C. McLeod was born in Scotland and his mother in Georgia. William was living in Appling county, GA in 1820 with his mother. He appears as an orphan in Smith's District, Bryan County in 1821 during the Fourth Land Lottery of Georgia. By 1824, his mother Milly McLeod had moved to that part of Lowndes County, GA that in more recent years has become Brooks County.

William served in Florida's Indian wars from 16 June 1837 to 18 December 1837 with the 15th Georgia Volunteers under Capt. John Hill. In 1840 the family was living in Lowndes County, Georgia. William served as Clerk of the Superior Court in Colquitt County, Georgia in 1856 and 1858. He was 5 feet, 10 inches tall with gray eyes, dark hair, and a light complexion.

William was in Thomas County, Georgia in 1850 according to the census of that year. He served as Clerk of the Superior Court in Colquitt Co., GA in 1856 and 1858. In 1860 he was living in Valdosta with his wife, five children, and three boarders. He moved his family to Hernando County, Florida about 1863, homesteading what became known as the "McLeod Settlement." This later became the community of Trilby.

William McLeod's estate was probated in Hernando County, Florida - Case #197.

Other McLeods living in Lowndes, Colquitt and Brooks Counties. at his time were born in either North or South Carolina.

Much of this information was provided by Harold McLeod who has traced his gggrandfather Simeon McLeod back to Bryan County, Georgia. He found him listed with John, James, William, and Mary in the 182? land lottery (Smiths District) as orphans. There was an Amelia also listed as a widow. She could be the "Milly" referenced earlier as the mother. Harold says the family moved to Lowndes County (now Brooks) in 1824.
