II. Wyoming County, New York

  1. A James Ward purchased land in Wyoming County, New York from the Holland Land Company, that is, he articled land in T.10, R.1 in 1805, Middlebury, Wyoming county. He was among the first church wardens of a Protestant Episcopal church in Sheldon, in 1811. He also had the first framed barn in Centerville, Allegany Co.

  3. A Revolutionary Ward soldier by the name of James Ward is buried in Java Village, Java Township, Wyoming County, New York.
    Nunda Town Historian Robert Gath provided the following info in 1972
  1. James Ward (maybe the same one as above) buried in the Java Villiage Cemetery that died 24 July 1834, age 70 yrs and was a veteran of the War of 1812.

    died 29 October 1881, age 82 yrs
    born 1799, New Hampshire
    married December 1817 in Sheldon, NY to Mr. John Eddy
    born 1795, Rhode Island and came to Jave in 1818
    died 14 February 1881, age 85 yrs

    Ward, Joseph (1838-89), U.S. clergyman and educator, born in Perry

    Center, Wyoming Co. N.Y.; graduated from Phillips Academy 1861 and from Brown University 1865; attended Andover Theological Seminary; ordained to be a missionary in Yankton, Dakota Territory, 1869; founded Congregational Association of Dakota and Yankton Academy; founded Yankton College 1881 and served as president until 1889; helped establish Dakota Hospital for the Insane 1879; promoted statehood through call for a constitutional convention.
