Thomas Washington Cowart was born to Thomas Jones Cowart & Sarah Jane Coxey at Coopers Gap, Polk District, Rutherford County, North Carolina, on 8 Dec 1869. He was known by family and friends as Uncle "Wash". The family is listed below on the 1880 Federal Census:

Wash married Tina (a/k/a Evelyn) Holland,¹ and they had at least two children: Frank Robert and John Thomas Cowart. About 1916, Wash was a widower and married Calla Sorgee. It is thought they lived at Waylan, Stephens County, TX and operated a boarding house or hotel. On the 1920 TX, Palo Pinto, Strawn census it shows Calla (head of household), Frank, and J.T. (John Thomas) Cowart.² It is unknown (at this time) where Wash or Evelyn are buried; however, they may be buried at Waylan.
