Elizabeth Brown, daughter of John Brown was to wed him on 10 July 1782 in New York.

The couple may have left quickly for Scotland from New York, as their earlier children were said to be born at Ecclefechan, Dumfries, but no records have been located. In 1786 they were preparing for a trip to Nova Scotia and must have arrived shortly thereafter settling in Cornwallis, Kings County. Some years later they took up residence at his original land grant in Parrsboro. James died in Amherst, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia on 6 June 1830.
