When the "troubles" broke out. He served with the Queens Rangers, and was present for the surrender at Yorktown 19 October 1781. The couple may have left quickly for Scotland from New York,
as their earlier children were said to be born at Ecclefechan, Dumfries, but
no records have been located. In 1786 they were preparing for a trip to Nova
Scotia and must have arrived shortly thereafter settling in Cornwallis, Kings
County. Some years later they took up residence at his original land grant in
Parrsboro. James died in Amherst, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia on 6 June 1830.
