According to census records for Westfield parish in 1851, James Nisbet arrived in New Brunswick from Ireland in June of 1840.

Mary (--?--) was born circa 1793 in Ireland (1861 census, Westfield parish, Kings Co, NB). She died after 1871.

2. Joseph2 NISBET (James1) was born circa 1809 in Ireland.1 He married Elizabeth Cunningham, daughter of John Cunningham and Jane Armstrong, on 29 Nov 1838 in Westfield, Kings Co, NB (Westfield Anglican Church). He died on 3 Aug 1887 in Milkish, Kings Co, NB (gravestone inscription). He was buried in Whitehead, Kings Co, NB (St Paul's Anglican Church).

According to census records, Joseph Nisbet arrived in New Brunswick in June of 1833.

Elizabeth CUNNINGHAM was born circa 1820 in Saint John Co, NB (christened at age 1).

3. Oliver2 NISBET (James1) was born circa 1824 (died at age 57). He married Mary Stewart, daughter of Robert Stewart and Letitia (--?--), on 18 Oct 1842 in Milkish, Kings Co, NB (New Brunswick Courier, 22 October 1842). He died on 2 May 1881 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (obituary dated 4 May 1881, Saint John Daily Times). He was buried on 5 May 1881 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB.

The 1862 Walling Map of Inhabitants shows both Oliver Nisbet and his brother Joseph Nisbet along Milkish Creek.

The Kings County Land Registry [Book Q3, pages 129 and 130] has recorded deed #29,973 in 1876 (kindly sent to the writer by Dorothy Wiggs) which states that Oliver Nisbet and wife Mary sold to William McCutcheon their share of the estate of Robert "Steward", "the said Mary being one of the heirs of the estate." The land was in Milkish, in the parish of Westfield, being Lot# 28 of 150 acres "more or less". The deed was dated 10 April 1876 and recorded 17 April 1876.

The 1881 census for Portland ward, in Saint John lists Oliver, 58; Mary, 61; William, 30; Robert, 27; John, 24; Joseph, 19; Living in the same household was son James, 34, wife Sophiah 29; Jessie, 5; Mary, 4; and Joseph 9/12 (born July). Oliver was listed as born Ireland, and a Presbyterian, but Mary and all her children were listed as Methodists.

Oliver Nesbitt's obituary appeared in the Saint John Daily Telegraph on 4 May 1881. It mentions that he left a wife and six children upon his death, and that the funeral was from his residence. He appeared on the census of 1861 (Oliver Nisbet, aged 39, born Ireland, of the Methodist faith, along with wife Mary, aged 41, also born Ireland. Their children were enumerated as Margaret, 18, b. NB; James, 14; William, 12; Letitia, 10; Robert, 8; and John, 6).2

Mary STEWART was born circa 1820 in Ireland.3 She died on 13 Oct 1890 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (Burial Permit, Vol 3, #395). She was buried in White Church, Kennebecasis, NB (Mary Stewart Nisbett was residing at 124 Princess Street at the time of her death from cancer of the bowel. Her burial permit indicates she was born in Milkish, Kings County, NB, while the 1861 census says she was born in Ireland. Her father was listed as William Stewart on the permit, and Joseph "Nesbitt" applied for it. This writer assumes that this was her youngest son, Joseph, born about 1862).

5. John3 NISBET (Joseph2, James1) was born on 21 Feb 1841 in Kings Co, NB.7 He married Susan Eliza Hogan on 5 Aug 1879 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. He died on 24 Dec 1907 in 15 Albert Street, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB, at age 66 (gravestone inscription). He was buried in Whitehead Cemetery, Whitehead, Kings Co, NB (St Paul's Anglican Church).

According to information Dorothy Wiggs researched, John Nisbet was a farmer and lived in Milkish at the time of his children's births. His death record indicated he died at 15 Albert Street, Saint John, but his residence was Kings County. He was survived by his wife and sons Fred J., James S., and Charles T., as well as one sister Mrs. James R. White.

Susan Eliza HOGAN was born on 8 Sep 1857.8 She died on 16 Dec 1918 at age 61 (Dorothy Wiggs, e-mail dated 2 March 2001, [email protected] .ca).

6. Mary Jane3 NISBET (Joseph2, James1) was born on 14 Jul 1843 in Milkish, Kings Co, NB.12 She married Ralph Haslett on 14 Sep 1871 in Hampton, Kings Co, NB.13 She died on 25 Jun 1907 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB, at age 63 (burial permit, Vol 16, #517, film F20752).

Ralph HASLETT was born on 6 Dec 1846.14

7. Elizabeth Ann3 NISBET (Joseph2, James1) was born on 1 Sep 1850 in Kings Co, NB.22 She married James R. White on 27 Jan 1875 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB.23

9. James3 NISBET (Oliver2, James1) was born circa 1847 in Kings Co, NB.32 He married Sophia Burket circa 1876. He died before 1891 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB.

The 1881 census for Portland, Saint John County [Ward 5, page 21] lists James, aged 34, wife Sophiah, aged 39 (b. Germany), along with their two daughters, Jessie, aged 5 and Mary, aged 4, and son Joseph, aged 9 mos (b. July).

Sophia BURKET was born on 26 Nov 1841 in Germany. She died on 21 Feb 1917 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB, at age 75.33,34 She was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. She appeared on the census of 1881 (aged 39, born Germany).35

11. Letitia3 NISBET (Oliver2, James1) was born on 16 Sep 1851 in Bayswater, Kings Co, NB (1901 census; obit says September 1852). She married John Galbraith on 29 Dec 1874.39 She died on 20 Mar 1939 in St John General Hospital, Lorneville, St John Co, NB, at age 87 (The paper mentions she is widow of John Galbraith. The funeral would be held "at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Allan MacInnis, 30 Peters Street on Thursday at 2:30 PM. Body will be held in the vault in Cedar Hill Cemetery and internmentat a later date in Lorneville". The obit lists children as Mrs. Allan MacInnis and Mrs. Robert Baird both of Saint John, Mrs. george Fuller of Oshawa [Ontario] and son William Henry Galbraith of Lorneville).40 She was buried in Lorneville Cemetery.

John GALBRAITH was born on 28 May 1845 in Kilkeel, Co. Down, Ireland (Stu Robinson, e-mail dated 15 Jan 2001). Stu Robinson [[email protected]] mentions that the 28 MAy 1845 date comes from the 1901 census. Mourne Presbyterian Church records indicate John was born 3 June 1845 and baptised 20 July 1845 in Kilkeel. He migrated to New Brunswick in 1847 at the age of 2.

13. John3 NISBET (Oliver2, James1) was born circa 1859 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (died aged 32 yrs). He married Eleanor J. Darrah, daughter of John Darrah and Rebecca Jones, on 11 Oct 1886 in FCB Church on Waterloo Street, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. He died on 13 May 1891 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (Saint John Co Burial Permits, Vol 3, #909 (PANB film #F20740)). He was buried on 16 May 1891 in Fernhill Cemetery (interred in public ground), Saint John, Saint John Co, NB.

John's burial permit states that he was John Nisbett, born in Saint John and his father was named Oliver.

The 1869/70 Portland Directory lists an Andrew Nesbitt with a house on City Road. The 1869/70 Saint John City directory has a John Nesbit, tailor's cutter with a house on Orange; a Mary Nisbet, widow of William at 102 Carmethen, and a John Nisbet, tailor at 21 Orange. John was employed as a millman at the time of his death at age 32 years. He was interred in public ground at Fernhill Cemetery. He was Millman in 1891.

Eleanor J. DARRAH was born on 26 Aug 1861 in NB. She married William Alexander Ward on 24 Sep 1896 in Saint John Co, NB (Saint John Co VR, Book 4/1896, Reg #2913 (PANB film #F15581)). She died on 7 Mar 1930 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB, at age 68. She was buried on 9 Mar 1930 in Church of England Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. Eleanor Darrah was located with her husband, Alexander Ward, for the 1901 census in Victoria Ward [2], at 102 Winter Street. She was listed as of Irish origin. The census also listed Alexander's children as well as her daughter, Ella May Nesbitt, then aged 10. Eleanor's mother was not far away at that time, residing at 98 Winter Street.

Eleanor's obituary appeared in Saint John's Evening Times Globe on Saturday, 8 March 1930. "Following a lingering illness,...died on Friday at her residence, 10 Millidgeville Avenue, at the age of 57 years. She leaves to mourn one daughter, Mrs. Stanley Wood of Boston, and three step-daughters, Mrs. George Maynes of this city; Miss Charlotte Ward of Beverly, Mass, and Mrs. J. Cheaney of Montreal. One sister, Mrs. James Daye of Main Street, North End, also survive[sic].).

16. James Scovil4 NISBET (John3, Joseph2, James1) was born on 16 Nov 1881 in Milkish, Kings Co, NB.43 He married Mary Agnes McLean on 28 Jun 1923 in Chapel Grove, Kings Co, NB (St Bridget's Church). He died in 1965 (Anna Nisbet, e-mail dated 2 Mar 2001; anna nisbet@ hotmail.com). He was buried in 1965 in St Bridget's Church.

Mary Agnes MCLEAN was born in 1899 in Milkish, Kings Co, NB (Dorothy Wiggs, e-mail dated 2 March 2001, [email protected] .ca). She died in 1974 (Dorothy Wiggs, e-mail dated 2 March 2001, [email protected] .ca).

35. Elizabeth Jane4 GALBRAITH (Letitia3Nisbet, Oliver2, James1) was born in 1879 (Stu Robinson, e-mail dated 15 Jan 2001). She married Robert John Baird on 2 Sep 1903 in Lorneville, Saint John Co, NB.50 She died on 25 Nov 1964.51

She was also known as Jennie.

Robert John BAIRD was born in 1875.52 He died in 1948 in Lorneville, Saint John Co, NB (1).53 He was buried in Lorneville Cemetery, Lorneville, Saint John Co, NB.54

She married George Fuller (Suzanne Lisson, email dated 1/12/01). She died on 18 Sep 1965 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (Suzanne Lisson, email dated 1/12/01). She was buried in Lorneville, Saint John Co, NB (Lorneville Cemetery).

39. Bertha Lindsey4 GALBRAITH (Letitia3Nisbet, Oliver2, James1) was born on 10 Apr 1890 in Lorneville, Saint John Co, NB.68 She married Louis J. Devine on 25 Sep 1912 in Lorneville, Saint John Co, NB.69

40. Ella May4 NISBET (John3, Oliver2, James1) was born on 22 Sep 1888 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (Saint John Co VR, Vol 2, p. 26, reg #866 (PANB film #F14954)). She married Stanley Fenwick Wood, son of William Judson Wood and Eveline Daley, on 16 Apr 1912 in Orient Heights, MA. She died on 27 Jan 1970 in Hudson, Middlesex Co, MA, at age 81. She was buried in Forestvale Cemetery, Hudson, Middlesex Co, MA.

A third birth record, from the 1901 census record of Saint John Co, Victoria 2 Ward, shows her birthday to be 6 September 1890.

Her birth record lists her as Ella May Nisbet, and her parents as John Nisbet and Ella J. Darrah. She was naturalized on 12 Dec 1938 in Boston, Suffolk Co, MA (Petition #190444, Certificate # 4560391 states Ella May Wood was aged 51 yrs, of fair complexion, with hazel eyes, black hair, 120 pounds and 5' 1 1/2 " tall, then a resident of 20 Causeway Street, Hudson, Massachusetts).

Stanley Fenwick WOOD was born on 22 Apr 1887 in Hampton Village, Kings Co, NB (His father, William Judson Wood, filed for late registration of his birth on 15 Jul 1940 at E. Saint John before Notary Public F.E. Jossely. William J. Wood stated he was a resident of Hampton and a carpenter at the time of Stanley's birth, the assisting physician being Dr. Smith).70 He died on 13 Sep 1949 in Hudson, Middlesex Co, MA, at age 62 ("Stanley F. Wood, 62, died very suddenly Tuesday morning at his home, 92 Manning Street. He had been convalescing rapidly from a severe attack suffered a month ago. Mr. Wood was born in St John's (sic), new Brunswick, son of the late William J. and Evelyn (Daley) Wood. He and his family had resided here for the past 26 years. He was employed as a machinist by the Lapointe Machine Tool Company. He was respected in the community, and held in high regard by many friends. He was a member and deacon of the First Federated Church. He leaves a wife; Mrs Ella M, (Nesbitt) Wood, two sons, Donald J. and Stanley R.,; two daughters, Misses Evelyn R.. and Doris E., all of Hudson; two brothers, Joseph P. and Carey S., and one sister, Mrs. Frank Crozier of St John's (sic), New Brunswick. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock, at the First Federated Church, with Rev. Frederick A. Hayes, pastor, officiating. Burial wil be at Forestvale Cemetery, in charge of William B. Leland, funeral director").71 He was buried on 15 Sep 1949 in Forestvale Cemetery, Hudson, Middlesex Co, MA.72 He was naturalized on 24 May 1937 in Boston, Suffolk Co, MA (Petition #176123, Certificate # 4525340 states Stanley Fenwick Wood was aged 50 yrs, of medium complexion, with blue eyes, grey hair, was 5' 4 " tall, 178 pounds, and then a resident of 20 Causeway Street, Hudson, Massachusetts. The only distinguishing mark was a scar on the back of his right hand).
