THOMAS SINEX FAMILY VAULT
FAIRVIEW CEMETERY
NEW ALBANY, FLOYD COUNTY, INDIANA
Historical facts on Fairview Cemetery which was given in a talk before the Floyd County Historical Society, Tuesday April 28, 1953, by Harold McCullock, Clerk of the Fairview Cemetery Board.
Fairview, New Albany's oldest cemetery is the burial site for some of the area's earliest settlers. Records of 1840 show the cemetery was known then as Old Northern Burial Grounds. Headstones show even earlier dates. The exact date of the first burial is unknown.
One of the older structures is the Thomas Sinex mausoleum (pictured below) with the first burial in it dated 1850. It was in 1850 Thomas Sinex built a vault to accommodate 42 caskets, 30 of which have been used to date (assuming this is date of the meeting noted above). The Sinex Vault was sealed on December 4, 1978. Note that some names were spelled different. They were often spelled the way they sounded. This was not always the right way.

Since I was very curious of this vault, purchased and established for the Thomas Sinex family, I thought I would see what I could find out about it and I put a Query online and the answer I received was as follows:
[Reply of query]:
While at the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library, the question was asked of one of the ladies working on the Fairview Cemetery Volumes and who researches the owner of each gravesite, if there were a way to find out who is buried in the Sinex vault. She said that it was also used as a "holding place" for bodies that could not be buried in the winter or until a grave could be dug at that time. Then the bodies were removed, but rarely was it noted when the body was actually removed from the vault and put into a grave. According to records, there are about 100 bodies buried in the vault, since it was not always recorded when one was removed, but the vault is not nearly that big, so we know better. Since the vault was sealed, it is probably impossible to know who is still buried in the vault. It would be my guess that since it was sealed, they left only members of the Sinex family, spouses, and
children inside the vault. [End of reply]
Thomas Sinex & wife Flora (nee West) were my 3rd great grandparents. Solomon West & wife Huldah Jane (nee Winfield) and being the parents of Flora were my 4th great grandparents.
