The Brothers Waukazoo: Joseph P., Moses P., and John Baptist

Taggart Roll Census listing for these three brothers & some of their children

The Taggart roll was used to determine those eligible for a cash settlement in a court claim over a Potawatomie treaty of the 19th century. Many native Americans in the Grand Traverse area signed up for it, but these are the only ones who got paid, indicating the court thought their claims were valid. Lacking other documentation of family relationships, this court claim established that Joseph P. Waukazoo of Minnesota, Moses P. Waukazoo of Petoskey, Michigan, and John Waukazoo of Northport were all brothers.  The Joseph P. Wakazoo in Polk Co. MI, is most likely the Joseph Waukazoo in Polk County, Minnesota, since there is no Polk County in the state of Michigan.

Descendants of Unknown Wakazo

Generation No. 1

1.  UNKNOWN1 WAKAZO

Records indicate that Gabriel Macka-de-pe-nessy (Gabriel Blackbird), Chief Good Heart, Chief Wa-Ka-Zoo (known to John Tanner when both

were in Manitoba about 1810), and "Ningwegon" aka "Old Wing" were siblings. The names of the parents of this group of siblings are unknown. For the sake of reference , I called their father "Unknown Wakazo".

Children of UNKNOWN WAKAZO are:
2. i. GABRIEL2 MACKA-DE-PE-NESSY, b. Abt. 1769; d. June 1861, Probably Emmet County, Michigan.  He was also called Gabriel Blackbird, Chief Blackbird, or Chief Blackhawk.  He was father of the Ottawa author Andrew Jackson Blackbird, upon whom much of the basic family data for this family depends.   His son summarizes him: "My own dear father was one of the head chiefs at Arbor Croche, now called Middle Village or Good Heart, which latter name was given at my suggestion by the Postoffice Department at Washington. My father died in June, 1861. His Indian name was Macka-de-pe-nessy,* which means Black Hawk; but somehow it has been mistranslated into Blackbird, so we now go by this latter name. My father was a very brave man. He has led his warriors several times on the warpath, and he was noted as one who was most daring and adventurous in his younger days. He stayed about twenty years in the country of Manitoba with his brother Wa-ke-zoo, among other tribes of Indians and white fur-traders in that section of the country. "
ii. GOOD HEART "KAW-ME-NO-TE-A" "In the fall of 1827, my father left his subjects at Arbor Croche proper, now Middle Village, in charge of his brother, Kaw-me-no-te-a, which means Good-heart, as he was persuaded by other chiefs to come and establish himself where the mission was and send his children to school. "  p. 48, Andrew J. Blackbird, History of Ottawa & Chippewa.
3. iii. WA-KE-ZOO, b. Abt. 1775; d. Abt. 1825.  Andrew Jackson Blackbird's History "Wa-ke-zoo was another great chieftain who died before my time in the country of Manitoba, out north.   He was also one of my father's brothers."
iv. WING "NINGWEGON", d. January 1839, Little Traverse Bay, MI.  Indian agent, scholar and writer Henry Rowe Schoolcraft noted in his journal: 10th. [January 1839] Died at Little Traverse Bay, on Lake Michigan, Ningwegon, or the Wing, the well-known American-Ottawa chief--a man who distinguished himself for the American cause at Detroit, in 1812, and was thrown into prison by the British officers for his boldness in expressing his sentiments. He received a life annuity under the treaty of 28th March, 1836."   From "A History of Northern Michigan and Its People" by Perry F. Powers, Harry Gardner Cutler, 1912: "Alcona county was first named Negwegon. The latter was the name of a well-known Chippewa chief who was a firm friend of the Americans in their conflict with the British terminating in the War of 1812. He was a fine type of the race, over six feet high, muscular, courageous and of strong intellect. He was known also as the Little Wing, the translation of his name.

 v. JOHN BAPTISTE ASSIGNAC, b. about 1768, d. 3 November 1866 Manitowaning, Manitoulin Island, Ontario.   The Rev. David Bacon lived on Mackinac Island between 1800 and 1805 while he unsuccessfully attempted to start a Protestant Mission to the Indians.  Bacon worked with Assignac there and described him this way: "He is a young chief, of a very worthy and respectable family, and is possessed of superior abilities".   Later in life Assignac became disaffected with the United State and moved to Manitoulin Island where he lived out his days.
