DR. JAMES H. WITHERSPOON

Dr. Witherspoon 1836 - 1905

Another of Lancaster's aged and greatly beloved citizens, Dr. James H. Witherspoon, has passed away. He breathed his last on Wednesday evening (1905) at his home on White street, surviving his lamented brother, the late Capt. B. J. Witherspoon, by a few weeks only.

"Dr. Jimmie" as he was familiarly called by his more intimate acquaintances, was without an enemy, and was admired and respected by all with whom he came in contact for his strong, manly character - generous nature and disposition.

Dr. Witherspoon was a native of Lanaster and was in his 70th year, having been born August 16, 1836. He was a son of the late Col. James H. Witherspoon whose other children were Capt. B. J. Witherspoon, Mrs. Eliza Jane Wylie, Mrs. Fannie Hall and S. C. Witherspoon. In his boyhood, Dr. Witherspoon attended school here, afterwards entering Mt. Zion Institute of Winnsboro. He spent one year, 1857, in the University of Virginia. He entered the Medical college of Charleston in 1858, graduating from that institution the following year. He was one of the first young men of Lancaster to volunteer for service in defense of his country in the War Between the States. He was first a corporal in the "Lancaster Greys", and later made hospital steward. At the reorganization of the regiment, his company became a part of the 5th Regiment of S. C. Volunteers, in which he served as assistant surgeon.

In 1869 Dr. Witherspoon was married to Miss Emma Hasseltine. Three sons and a daughter blessed their union.
