There are sixty-seven applicants taking the examination which is conducted by the following board: Inspector James Martin, Supt. F. H. Kohlbaker, Patrick McGrane and Thomas D. Lloyd. Owing to the ill health Mr., Martin is unable to be present at the sessions. His place is being filled by Thomas H. Each applicant for a certificate as mine foreman must answer 85 percent of the questions correctly, and each applicant for assistant mine foreman will be requested to answer 80 percent correctly. In addition, each applicant is required to furnish a recommendation as to character and must also present his certificate as a miner. Two sessions were held today, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The morning session closed at noon and the afternoon session will close at 5 o’clock. The same hours will prevail tomorrow. List of Questions The following list of questions was asked of the applicant this morning: State when, at what mines, by when employed, and in what capacity you have had practical experience in mining in the anthracite mines of this state. What re the requirements of the anthracite mine law when it becomes necessary to remove any props or timbers for the purpose of mining coal that may supported by the same? There is passing through a mine 25,000 cubic feet of air per minute; what would be the velocity per second in an airway 7.5 feet by 5.5 feet? How would you make an air-tight ditch under a wall at main door on a gangway road where there was a large flow of water sometimes and a very small flow at other times, so as to keep the gangway road free from water? Show by diagram. If you were acting as fireboss and had a gangway driven 200 feet ahead of the last heading, and you found in your examination that the gangway continued explosive gas back 100 feet from the face, how would you proceed? If a gangway is driven S. 35 degrees E. and the chambers N. 30 degrees E., what should be the distance between the center lines of the chambers measured along the gangway, the cambers and pillars being 3 and 7 yards respectively?
