1914 WB Record Almanac, Capital Crimes in 1913. During the year 1913 there were nineteen murders in Luzerne County, compared with thirteen in 1912, fifteen in 1911, fourteen in 1910, fifteen in 1909, fourteen in 1908, fourteen in 1907, thirteen in 1906, twelve in 1905, eight in 1904 and ten in 1903. Early in the year a coroner’s jury found that Thomas F Duddy of Plains, whose body was found in a clump of bushes with the throat cut, no weapon being found, came to his death at the hands of a party or parties unknown. Jan. 25 William Thomas of Plymouth, 47 years old, was shot and almost instantly killed during an altercation with his father. The latter was acquitted. April 21 James Carosse of Hazelton died from a bullet wound sustained while attending a christening. May 10 “Tony” Mode, 25 years old, of Plains, was shot and instantly killed as the result of a quarrel that started in a barroom. May 21 the body of “Sandy” Malavento was found near the Sugarloaf reservoir, in the Hazelton region, with stab wounds. It is supposed that he was killed during a quarrel. June 1 Joseph Mileno of Swoyerville was shot and died half an hour later. July 5 Benjamin Baum of Yatesville was shot after a quarrel. July 7 the body of Alice Crispell was found in Harvey’s Lake under conditions that indicated murder. The case created quite a sensation. July 12 Joseph Sida of Brodick was shot and almost instantly killed after a wedding dance, during which there had been a quarrel. July 15 Bernardo Scilliasi was shot at his home in Yatesville. July 22 William Hutchins of Jackson Township, 40 years old, was partially beheaded while at work as foreman for the Spring Brook Water Co. with an axe in the hands of a workman, Michael Bushis, who was found to be demented. July 31 Edward Cardiff of Wilkes-Barre, 18 years old, was struck a blow in a saloon side room, which resulted in his death a few hours later. Aug. 3 Edward Engle of Luzerne Borough, 32 years old, died as the result of a bullet wound inflicted the day previous, following a quarrel. Aug. 2 Edward Sullivan of Hanover Township, 45 years old, died of a bullet wound inflicted by a police officer while resisting arrest. Aug. 20 Thomas Williams of Hazelton, 18 years, was killed while attempting to act as peacemaker in a fight. Sept. 1 Nicholas Zemba of Wilkes-Barre Township, 22 years, was killed by a blow struck during a quarrel. Sept. 1 Frank Grillo of Hazleton, 35 years, was shot by a man whose home he visited demanding money, it was alleged. Oct. 25 Michael Rodaman of Hazelton, aged 26, shot during a quarrel.
