1919 WB Record Almanac, Capital Crimes in 1918 Typed by Irene Transue During the year 1918 there were thirteen cases of capital crime in Luzerne County. The record for other years is: 12 in 1917; 21 in 1916; 14 in 1915; 14 in 1914; 21 in 1913; 12 in 1912; 14 in 1911; 14 in 1910; 15 in 1909; 14 in 1908; 14 in 1907; 13 in 1906; 12 in 1905; 8 in 1904; 10 in 1903. In January, Luigi Cerebra of Mocanaqua was stabbed in a drunken quarrel. In February, Chief of Police Ray Curwood of Shickshinny died of bullet wounds inflicted by William B. Faulds of the same place after Curwood had demanded a revolver that Faulds was carrying. The latter was convicted of murder in the first degree, but died in jail of tuberculosis. In February, Stanley Whitchefsky of Parsons was kicked in the abdomen during a quarrel and died. In May, James Howell of Port Jervis, N. Y., was shot and killed at Avoca, where he was boarding, by the man of the house, because of jealousy, it was alleged. In May, James Brown of Hazleton was stabbed during a quarrel. In July, Philip Sidor of Lafllin was shot while sleeping in a barn near his home, supposedly out of revenge. In July, Alexander Logan of Swoyersville and Santo Volte of Pittston were shot at Swoyersville, the former while pursuing the man who shot Volte. In July, another double murder occurred at Wyoming, the victims being the chiefs of police of Wyoming and West Wyoming, Edward Brennan and Ralph Daley. The latter was shot while attempting to quell a disturbance among Italians and the former a few hours later while pursuing the supposed murderer. In September, Mrs. Josephine Jacobs and her daughter, Mrs. James O'Malia were shot to death at their home in Wilkes-Barre by a rejected suitor of a sister of Mrs. O'Malia. In November Angelo Baruso of Pittston was shot during a fight.
