December 1926 1. Republican County files an expense account of $8,785 in the last campaign for State, senatorial and legislative candidates, this being exclusive of the individual accounts by candidates. 2. Judge Jones decides that a liquor law violation is not a crime punishable in a penetentiary, therefore not one that requires the imposition of a maximum and minimum sentence .United States Public Health Service estimates that Wilkes-Barre's health bill, including doctor, nurse and drug bills and loss of wages averages $22 a year per person. Cold spell and snow, thermometer 14 degrees in Wilkes Barre Wyoming Valley Women's Club rings up the curtain on the holiday season with a brilliant ball in Irem Temple. Another dynamite outrage in Pittston, store and home of Charles Cumbo partially wrecked and many homes in the vicinity rocked, identity and purpose of the miscreants unknown. 5. Memorial High School, the Hill Street School or at the site of the proposed Carey Avenue High School. 7. Adams of Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania State Physical Education Society meets in W-B. 12. Prominent laymen speak in eleven churches on prohibition and its enforcement. 13. Franklin Siegfried of W-B, nine years of age gives a remarkable recital on the violin for one so young. 14. At a meetinting with the medical experts and others, the County Commissioners state their intentions to send poor tubercular patients to the White Haven sanitarium instead of building a county sanitarium, as decreed by the people a number of years ago Jury in an unusual case renders a verdict of $2,000 against a Pittston merchant for selling a rifle to a minor with which a little girl was killed Gold watches presented to Walter Stauffer, foreman, and Henry F. Hirchdorfer assistant foreman at the Tomhicken colliery for heroism in keeping alive and helping to rescue five men entombed for eight days Judge William S. McLean Jr., Colonel of the 109th Regiment,appointed Brigadier General of the 53rd Artillery Brigade Concordia Society gives a concert in Irem Temple with John Barnes Wells, tenor and Robert O'Connor pianist as soloists. Six hundred people attend the annual dinner of the West Side Community Association in Kingston Another cold wave with light fall of snow; thermometer nine degrees above zero in Wilkes-Barre Will Rogers, famous humorist, appears at the Irving theatre Plans laid for a campaign in WB and vicinity to raise $110,000, part of which is for the relief of suffering Jews in Europe and part for the rehabilitation of the ancient homeland in Palestine. 17. Local judges break a prolonged deadlock over the appointment of County Assessors by naming two of the old members, Paul Bedford of Wilkes-Barre and Max Friedlander of Hazleton and one new member, John A. Parry of Forty Fort in place of Thomas A. Grace of Pittston Wilkes-Barre council fixes the tax levy for the coming year at thirteen mills, an increase of one mill. County Coroner Thomas warns the public against purchasing the liquor offered for sale, stating that in almost every case it is poisonous stuff Mr. and Mrs. Edward Charlton of Wilkes-Barre celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. 23. John Kehoe of Pittston, through Attorney General Woodward, brings suit against State Senator P.F.Joyce of Pittston to oust him as poor director of the Pittston poor district on the ground that the law prohibits a member of the Legislature from holding any other civil office by appointment. 24. Sensational graft charges made against the members of the Hanover township School Board by 18 citizens, who petition the court to oust the 7 directors; it is alleged that the directors benefited to the extent of hundreds of thousands of dollars and that many local business people were involved in dividing contracts and sales .26. William W. Multer, real estate and insurance man, chosen to conduct the next Community Welfare Federation campaign Joseph P. W.A.Valentine of Wilkes-Barre made counsel for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Luzerne and Lackawanna counties. Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Nulton of Wyoming celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary. 3. Hanover township school directors against whom charges of graft were made withdraw their opposition to the ouster proceedings in court and make themselves liable to dismissals as directors, whereupon warrants of arrest are sworn out against them and they are placed under $25,000 bail each for a later hearing. 5. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas D. Mekeel of Lehman celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Mr. and Mrs. William J. Simmons of Hazleton celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. 7. Dr. George T. Baskett of Wilmar, Minnesota, made superintendent of the county mental hospital at Retreat. 11. March Grand Jury held over for another week to pass upon the Hanover township school board graft charges. Miss Marya Teresczzakowha of Litow, Poland, who fought in the trenches in the World War and was wounded several times and who later served in the defense of Litow from the Bolshevists, tendered a dinner by the Falcon Society. Death of Rev. Dr, T.C. Edwards of Edwardsville, one of the best known preachers in northeastern Pennsylvania and one of the most eminent Welshmen in the United States. 12. Edward P. Newly appointed school board for Hanover township authorizes the attorneys to institue legal proceedings against the ousted directors for the recovery of large sums of money alleged to have been misappropiated. 26. Walsh of Wilkes-Barre Judge Fuller imposes sentence upon the eight men who were convicted and the one who pleaded guilty in The Hanover township school board fraud cases; the men of the ousted school board, one contractor and one architect given the maximum penalty, from one to two years of imprisonment. the costs and $500 fine each; the sentence on the membe who gave evidence on the strength of which his fellow directors were convicted was given the same sentence. 28. Lynott, pastor of St Patrick's church, Wilkes-Barre, observes the 25th anniversary of his ordination. St. Mary's Greek Catholic church in Edwardsville, said to be the oldest Greek Catholic church in the United States, celebrates its 40th anniversary. Death of Mrs. Ann Roberts of Edwardsville, 93 years, oldest resident of that place Rev S.A. Dreler, rector of St. Mary's Polish Catholic church, Plymouth, observes the 25th anniversary of his ordination. 13. William J. Coplan reappointed county tax collector for the city of Pittston and John Bayles for Hazleton. 15. Death of Karl L. Koerner, 67 years, principal of Hoyt school. 21. Mr. and Mrs. William H. Two Luzerne County residents die from the heat, Harry Weed of Beach Haven falls from a tank and Isaac Benjamin found dead in a field. AUGUST 2. John Maloney acts as Mayor for a day in Wilkes-Barre. 3. About 25 aliens in Wilkes-Barre and vicinity marked for deportation on evidence that they entered the United States contrary to the immigration law. 8. William Owens and two sons burned to death in a fire in Avoca, the father while attempting to rescue the sons. 15. Death of James Park, aged 90 years, oldest resident of Harvey's Lake, a veteran of the Civil War, had been living at the lake since 1859. 21. Mrs. John G. Zitterman of Forty Fort killed and her husband seriously injured in a motor accident along the Sullivan Trail near Falls. 22. Mr. and Mrs. S.D. Harrison of Wilkes-Barre celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. 23. S. Clem Reichard of Wilkes-Barre elected president of the State Association of Elks .Miss Clara L. Nolen, chosen general secretary of the Wilkes-Barre YWCA. Miss Frances Dorrance appointed by Governor Fisher a member of the Pennsylvania Historical Commission. SEPTEMBER 2. Home of Daniel T. McKelvey, detective of Hazleton, badly damaged by dynamite, presumably, revenge Miss Esther J Cantor of Wilkes-Barre names as Miss Wilkes-Barre for this years beauty pageant at Atlantic City. Miss Agnes M. Berry wins the womens singles tennis championship in annual tournament of the Wyoming Valley Tennis Association. Joseph Engle, local representative, receives a consignment of typewriters from Hartford, Conn. by airplane, the machines dropped by the plane by parachute in Kirby Park County Commissioners offer rewards of $2,500 each for the arrest and conviction of the dynamiters who wrecked the residence of Detective McKelvey in Hazleton, murderers of Edith Fonza and Jennie Monica near Inkerman last June. 29. Several arrests of local people in connection with the theft from a New York City bank of $79,000 worth of Bridgeport, Conn., municipal bonds; It is alleged that local people took $50,000 worth of the bonds from a "fence"; many of the bonds were found in banks in Wilkes-Barre and vicinity, where they had been given as security for loans; it is alleged that the money was used in financing one of the campaigns in the recent primaries. OCTOBER 1. Senator Andrew J. Sordoni, president of the Pennsylvania Transportation Co., together with District Attorney Thomas M. Lewis and Frank Martz, organizes a company for passenger and express service to all parts of the United States, Mexico and Canada, with a station in Wilkes-Barre. Contests in the official count of the primaries election finally decided by the court. John V. Kosek given the third Republican nomination for Judge over Abram Salsburg and David M.
