March 26 – Mrs. Mary ORBAN, 34, of Alden, arrested for pouring pint of ammonia down throat of two-year-old son, Frank, Jr. Mrs. Orban was committed to Retreat Mental Hospital by Judge John J. Aponick April 3 – Santo M. MANGANARO, 66, of Pittston, fatally wounded in a store he rented to Vincenzo “Jimmy the Barber” CONSENTINO, Main Street, Pittston. Consentino, who pleaded guilty and placed himself at the mercy of the court, was sentenced to life imprisonment by Judge W.A. Valentine. September 16 – Vernon L. HUNTER, 58-year-old Wilkes-Barre railroader, fatally beaten in a lonely section of North Pennsylvania Avenue. Two Wilkes-Barre youths, Simon TIRPAK and George TOMCYK, were arrested same day for the crime and indicted by the Grand Jury. When Tirpak’s case was called for trial, both defendants entered pleas of guilty. President Judge B.R. Jones took cases under study before imposing sentence. October 5 – Benjamin MARCIAVAGE, 46, found beaten to death in a rooming house at 4 Metcalf Street, Wilkes- Barre. Wilkes-Barre policy arrested his roommate, Charles RASKE, 54, who was indicted by Grand Jury and was being held in County Prison. Typed by Gail Elm, May 2004
