1837 DEATHS



2 JULY 1837, Friday


At Truro, on Friday the 25th ult, Miss Margaret Clyma, aged 39 years.� Her affliction was not of long duration but severe.� The grace of God enabled her patiently to endure it, and then her spirit took its flight to realms of bliss.

On the 30th ult, at Trewardale, Elizabeth, the widow of the Rev. John Basset Collins, aged 83 years, much regretted by all her relations and friends.

On Sunday last, Mrs. Gartrell, relict of the late Mr. Richard Gartrell, (mayor of Liskeard) at the advanced age of 96 years.� And on Tuesday last, Mr. Tucker, at an advanced age.

On Friday the 19th ult, loved and respected by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance, and after a lingering illness of nearly 18 years, Mrs. Reed, mother of Mr. John Reed of Hay, in the parish of Ladock, aged 87 years.

Suddenly, at Redruth, Mr. Wm. Edwards, tailor, aged 66 years; also, on Monday last, Mr. Edward Nicholl, gardener, aged 62 years.

At Redruth, after three days' illness, Mrs. Penrose, relict of the late Mr. John Penrose, aged 79 years.

At Bodmin, on Tuesday last, the infant daughter of Mr. Oliver, of the Hotel.

Suddenly at Penzance, on Wednesday last, Mr. John Newton, butcher.

At Paul, on the 21st ult., Mr. John Kneebone, aged 53 years; for upwards of 40 of which he was an excellent and useful member of the Wesleyan Methodist Society in that place; his end was peace.

In London, on Tuesday last, aged 23 years, beloved and respected by all who knew him, Nathaniel, second son of Mr. John Vercoe, tailor, of St. Austell.

On the 14th ult, in St. Keverne Alms-house, George Thomas, aged 87 years.


9 JUNE 1837, Friday


Suddenly, at Idless, on Friday last, Mrs. Powell, aged 74 years.

On Monday last, at Mount Ambrose, Redruth, after a protracted illness, which she bore with exemplary Christian fortitude and resignation, Miss Juliana Teague, aged 20 years.

At Marazion, on the 5th instant, Mrs. Cornish, relict of the late Wm. Cornish, Esq. aged 87 years.

At Hayle, on Wednesday last, Mrs. Jane Thomas, aged 57 years.

On Friday last, at Landewednack, Mr. Richard Lawrence, aged 75 years, a man universally respected and beloved.

On the 5th instant, at Falmouth, Elizabeth Tregellas, wife of William Gibbins, and second daughter to the late Robert Ware Fox, of that place.


16 JUNE 1837, Friday


On the 10th instant, at Polmenick, at Madron, after a protracted illness which he bore with great composure and resignation, and highly respected by an extensive circle of friends, Mr. James Glasson, yeoman, for many years a member and liberal supporter of the Society called Bible Christians.

At Falmouth, on the 13th instant, the second son of Mr. Goad, aged 19 years.

At West Looe, on the 8th instant, Mrs. Taylor, aged 69 years.

At Penzance, on Tuesday last, Mrs. Thomas, relict of the late Mr. John Thomas, aged 70 years.

At Stoke Bishop, near Clifton, aged 62 years, Charlotte, wife of W. P. Taunton, Esq. and eldest daughter of the late Rev. Joseph Townsend, rector of Pusey, Wilts.

At Helston on Friday last, of hooping cough, Charles, the infant son of T. Rogers, Esq. solicitor.

On Friday last, at Tregony, aged 26 years, the wife of Mr. John Devonshire.

On Friday last, at Pentewan, Mr. William Cuba, aged 79 years.

At Pill, near Truro, on Friday the 9th instant, Mary Ann, youngest daughter of Mr. Wm. Thomas of that place, aged 16 years and 10 months.� She had a protracted and painful illness with truly Christian fortitude�- not one repining expression was heard to drop from her lips; her confidence in her "Blessed Saviour" was unshaken, and her delight was in the prospect "of going home".

At Seveock[sic], near Truro, on the 10th instant, Mr. Hick, aged 85 years.

On Wednesday last, at Camelford, aged 52 years, Phebe Wade, wife of Mr. John Wade, Tintagel, and niece of Mr. Van Buren, President of the United States of America.� Mr. Wade married at New York in the year 18[04?] and returned to Tintagel, his native place, after an absence of above 20 years.

On Wednesday last, at Camelford, the infant daughter of Mr. Richard Burt.

At Cadiz, on the 31st ultimo, Mr. Philip Collier, son of the late Mr. Collier, surgeon, of Mevagissey, mate of the "Roseland", aged 26 years.

On Friday last, at the house of his father at Penven gate, St. Goran, Mr. Philip Smith, auctioneer of Mevagissey, aged 32 years, leaving a widow and four small children.� Same day, Mr. Benjamin Kitto, may... of Mevagissey, at the advanced aged of 90.� On the�... instant, Mr. William Hodges, clerk, of that parish.

On the 8th instant, at Ladock, after an illness of a few days, Mrs. Catherine Manuel aged 50 years.� She was a member of the Wesleyan Society twenty�... years, and died as she had lived, in the comfort of religion, and greatly respected by all who know her.

Last week, at St. Austell, aged 58 years, Mr. Annear, relict of the late Capt. W. Annear, of that place.

At Alverton, Penzance, the lady of Thomas Paul, Esq.

Suddenly, at Tywardreath near Fowey, on Monday last, Mr. W. Hoal, of Fowey Consols mine. He was much respected by all who knew him, and has left a wife and five children to lament their loss.

On Wednesday last, at Redruth, of consumption, Mr. Richard Williams, a commercial traveler for the house of Messrs. Evans, of Long Lane, London, aged 41 years.

At Camelford, on Sunday last, Mr. John Symons, aged 80 years, having been a consistent member of the Wesleyan Methodist Society more than half a century.

Suddenly at St. Keverne, on Monday last, Mr. Richard Harris, aged 80 years.

At the residence of Mr. John Penrose, Redruth, on Wednesday the 28th instant, Mr. Richard Williams.

At Redruth on Monday, the 26th instant, Mr. William Curry, schoolmaster.

At Hayle, on Friday last, Capt. John Davies, late of the brig "Newton" of Bideford, aged 75 years.

At Phillack, on Thursday last, Mrs. Blight, wife of Capt. Peter Blight.

Coroner's Inquest - Rebecca Trembath, aged 62 years, of Chacewater, who died in a fall from a cart on Cock's Hill, between Chacewater and St. Day. Deodand, one shilling.

Coroner's Inquest - John Trebilcock, aged 45 years, of Truro, a husbandman of "irregular habits", but being of a cheerful dispositon, who fell from the window of his rented room and so damaged his head that he died.

Both verdicts - Accidental death
