5 APRIL 1839, Friday


At Newham Cottage, near Truro, on the 4th instant, after a long illness, George Robert Doudny, the youngest son of Capt. Hiurt[?], R.N., aged 24 years.

At Marazion, on the 29th ult, the infant daughter of R. E. Tippet, Esq. Also, Mr. N. Eddy, aged 29 years.

At Plymouth, on Sunday, the 24th of March, about noon, the Rev. Joseph Burgess, in the 82nd year of his age, and the 40th of his ministry. He spent his earlier years in the Army in Ireland, where he became quarter-master, and pay-master to the regiment. Amid the . and dangers of a military life, he was truly converted to God, joined the Methodist Society, and at length began to preach that gospel, the power of which he had himself experienced. Being personally acquainted with the Rev. John Wesley, and feeling a wish to be employed in some way more conducive to the welfare of his fellow creatures, he corresponded on the subject with the venerable man, by whom he was accepted, and called out as an itinerant preacher at the last conference at which Mr. Wesley presided. As a minister of Jesus Christ, he was diligent and faithful in the discharge of all the duties devolving upon him; and his labours were dedicate]ed to the conversion and edification of many, having passed twenty years of his itinerant life in Cornwall, he was extensively known and beloved in this county. He was a bright example of every Christian virtue; and for many of the later years of his life was regarded not only by his own family and particular acquaintances, but by the public generally, with a high degree of veneration. He was looked upon as a saint of a superior order; as one of the patriarchal relics of a former generation; and as exhibiting a fine specimen of Christian simplicity and humility, of deep and unaffected piety, of zeal, disinterestedness, and benevolence. He preached and administered the lord's supper a fortnight before his death; and during the last week of his life was employed in ministerial duties and labours of love. He had an apoplectic seizure on Saturday night, and after about fifteen hours and a half, he very peacefully entered into that rest which remaineth for the people of God.

On Wednesday, the 27th ult., at his residence, Mosman-place, Hackney, London, Samuel Cardozo, Esq., aged 62 years, deeply regretted by his family and numerous friends.

At Redruth, on Sunday last, Mr. William Shephard, aged 50 years.

On Sunday last, at his residence, Pedryn, after a short illness, Mr. Joseph Sawell, aged 74 years, much regretted by all who knew him. He was a man of strong intellect, strict integrity, was hospitable to his friends, and a kind neighbour.

At Bodmin, on Monday last, after an illness of 21 hours, Jane, youngest daughter of Mr. George Sowden, aged 22 years.

At St. Stephens in Branwell, on the 27th ult., Charles , son of Mr. Samuel Lawry, miller, aged 1 year and 8 months.

At Lambessow, near Truro, on Tuesday last, Mary Jane, youngest daughter of Mr. Whitford.

On the 1st instant, at the house of the Rev. D. Evans, Babcary, Somerset, Martha, widow of the late Mr. Jewel, surgeon, of St. Columb, aged 90 years.

At Penryn, on Friday last, Miss Caroline Charlotte, second daughter of S. S. Street, Esq., surgeon, aged 21 years.

At Falmouth, on Friday last, of water on the brain, Lydia, daughter of W. H. Bond, Esq., aged five years.

Last week, at Fowey, the youngest daughter of Mr. Richard Webber, aged six months.

At Knackersnowle, near Plymouth, on the 28th ult., where he had removed for change of air, Mr. S. P. Statinford, aged 32 years, for many years the highly respected master of the Helston National School.

At Helston, on the 4th instant, John Kerby, only child of Mr. Guy Guy.

At Helston, on the 4th instant, the infant son of Mr. Repper, aged five months.

On Saturday last, in London, much regretted, Mr. Edward Harris, hat-manufacturer, late of Redruth.

On Sunday last, at St. Day, the infant son of Mr. R. Hoskin, retail brewer.

On Wednesday morning last, suddenly, Mr. Samuel Trenery, merchant &c., Penryn, aged 75 years.

At Lower-quarter, in the parish of Ludgvan, on Friday last, Joseph Trewren, aged 24 years.

At Liskeard, on Tuesday last, Mrs., Rogers, widow of the late Mr. Rogers, shopkeeper, of that town.

At East Looe, on the 20th instant, Henry Duncan, infant son of Capt. Tolup Nicholas, R.N.

At Orbrook, near Denby, Rhode, the beloved wife of the Rev. W. Mudge, of Bodmin, leaving a family of five children, the youngest not a month old - her end was peace.

On the 11th instant, at Tavistock, Margaret, relict of the late Henry Beauford, Esq., of Tavistock, in her 24th year, universally beloved and deeply lamented by all ranks.
