5 JULY 1839, Friday


At Truro, on Tuesday last, after a lingering illness, which she bore with the greatest fortitude and resignation, in her thirtieth year, Elizabeth Catherine, the beloved wife of E. J. Spry, Esq., and on the day preceding, Charles, their infant son, aged six months.

On Saturday, the 29th ultimo, in Kenwyn-street, Truro, Mr. David McIlwraith, grocer and tea-dealer, aged 43 years. Mr. McIlwraith was a native of Colmonell, Ayrshire; in life, he was highly respected, and in death, he is deeply lamented by a numerous circle of friends and acquaintances.

At Quethiock, on the 27th ult., the wife of Mr. W. Ough, innkeeper, aged 56 years.

At Gunnis Lake, Calstock, on the 27th ult., the wife of Mr. Joseph Strick, jun., innkeeper.

On the 23rd ult., at Falmouth, Edwin, fourth son of Mr. W. Hamlyn, glazier & c., aged 14 years.

On Tuesday, the 23rd ult., at Camborne, John, son of mr. Samuel Whear, aged 19 years.

On Friday, the 28th ult., after a long and painful illness, which she bore with Christian patience and resignation to the will of her Divine Maker, Mary, the beloved wife of Mr. William Harry, of New Bridge, Calstock, leaving a disconsolate husband and two infant children to mourn their irreparable loss. She was an affectionate wife, a tender mother, and sincerely beloved by a numerous circle of friends.

At Stythians, on the 26th ultimo, Mr. Samuel Hearle, a respectable farmer, of that parish, and a member, leader, trustee, and steward in the Methodist Society at Ponsanooth, for upwards of 36 years.- His end was peace.

At Hayle, on Friday last, Mrs. Elizabeth Harris, aged 66 years. Also, on Tuesday, Miss Charity Wearne, aged 45 years.

On Thursday, the 27th ult., at Gunwin, in the parish of Lelant, aged 24 years, Blanche, the eldest daughter, and on Friday, aged 23 years, Henry, the third son of Mr. Andrew Hosking. They were greatly respected by all who knew them, and are now very deeply lamented by a numerous circle of friends.

On Sunday last, at Penryn, Mary, the eldest daughter of Mr. Rundle, saddler, &c., aged 4 years.

At Holmbush, last week, Mr. T. Trelaney, aged 88 years.

On the 19th ult., at Chelsea, the Rev. J. Gaultier, who had been a minister in the Wesleyan Connexion nearly 60 years, and was among the few remaining ministers who were contemporaries with the venerable founder of Methodism.

On Monday last, at his residence, Strangway's terrace, Truro, the Rev. Edmund Clarke, Baptist Minister, aged .. years, deeply regretted by a large circle of warmly-attached friends. Mr. Clarke's early years were devoted to the study of the law with a respectable lawyer in London, who formed so high an estimate of his worth that he offered him a share of his practice, and repeated his offer more than once on subsequent occasions. On the 4th instant, at Penzance, of consumption, where he had arrived from Maderia only five days previously, Rev. Cornelius William Lyne, aged 35 years, Minister .. of Grange, in the county of Armagh, Ireland.

On Wednesday last, at Gulval, near Penzance, Mr. Christopher Mathews, aged 58 years.

At Hayle, on Friday last, Mr. William Veale, aged 86 years.

On the 6th instant, at St. Ives, Mr. Isaac Thomas, aged . years.

19 JULY 1839, Friday


At Truro, yesterday, after a lingering illness, Mrs. Brewer, wife of Mr. Nicholas Brewer, aged 52 years.

At Bodmin, on Saturday last, Mr. James Liddell, printer &c, aged 74 years. Mr. Liddell was one of the oldest tradesmen in Bodmin, and the oldest printer in the county, having commenced business in that place 50 years ago, at a time when there was one of the same line in Cornwall, and that was at Falmouth. He was much respected through life, and his death is deeply lamented by his numerous family and friends.

On the 5th last, suddenly, of a fit of apoplexy, at his residence at Bodmin, John Brabant- Bate, Esq. a gentleman of high attainments and character, and who was universally esteemed by a numerous circle of friends whilst living, and is regretted in death by all who knew him.

On the 14th instant, at Restronguet, Catherine, daughter of Mr. Henry Gray, shipwright, aged 9 years; also, on the 15th, Elizabeth Hannah, daughter of the above, aged 4 years.

At St. Clement's Church-town, near Truro, Mr. George Vandersluice, many years clerk of that parish.

Last week, at St. Agnes, Mr. W. Gary, aged 72 years.

On Tuesday, the 9th instant, at Trencreek, Lower St. Columb, Mrs. Rickard, wife of Mr. Wm. Rickard, aged 84 years.

On Friday, the 12th last, at Newlyn, Mr. Simon Searle, aged 79 years.

At Bell, in the parish of Gwennap, on Tuesday, the 2nd instant, after an illness of three weeks, occasioned by a broken thigh, Mrs. Ann Tregonning, the beloved wife of the late Mr. John Tregonning. She bore her sufferings, which at times were very acute, with the greatest patience and resignation to the Divine will, and expired with a good hope of a blessed immortality. She was a regular and consistent member of the Methodist Society for upwards of 20 years, and was highly esteemed in all the relations of life by those who had the pleasure of her acquaintance.

At Saltash, on the 9th instant, Ellen Forbes, infant daughter of Michael Scott, Esq., Purser, R.N., aged one year.

On the 15th inst., at his house in Chester-square, deeply lamented, Winthrop Mackworth Praed, Esq., Member of Parliament for the borough of Aylesbury, late Fellow of Trinity College, and Deputy High Steward of the University of Cambridge, in the 37th year of his age.

On the 8th instant, at Rempstone Rectory, deeply lamented by his family, his parishioners, and numerous friends, after a long and painful illness, which he bore with Christian fortitude and pious resignation, the Rev. Thomas Hosking, rector of Rempstone and Basford, in Nottinghamshire. He was a native of the western part of Cornwall, and was, for a short period, the master of Sidwell College, Cambridge; from thence he retired to Rempstone, the living of that parish being conferred on him by a subsequent master. The late Lord Eldon ranked him amongst his friends, highly appreciated his worth, and presented him with Basford. As a preacher of the gospel, he was eloquent and persuasive, and in private life, he continued to his last breath an example of the brightest virtues which can adorn the human character.

At Cardiff, on Friday, the 28th ultimo, after a painful and lingering illness, which she bore with the greatest fortitude and resignation, Anne, the beloved wife of Mr. Thomas Rickard, leaving a large family to lament their loss.


26 JULY 1839, Friday


At Trevere, in St. Issey, on the 22nd instant, aged 49 years, John Veall, Esq., much regretted. His loss will be severely felt by the poor of his neighbourhood, and especially by his afflicted and bereaved wife.

On Sunday, the 14th instant, at Trevorrian, Mr. S. Reed, aged 67 years.

At Padstow, on Thursday, the 18th instant, universally respected, after a lingering illness which he bore with Christian fortitude, Captain George Bellamy, of the schooner "Criterion," aged 40 years.

At Pool, suddenly, on Sunday last, Georgiana, eldest daughter of Mr. George Pryce.

At Camborne Vean, on the 22nd instant, aged 15 years, Jane, the eldest daughter of Capt. James Thomas, jun., of Stray Park Mine, much esteemed, and greatly regretted by all who knew her.

At Camborne, on Saturday last, Ann, the widow of the late Capt. Joseph Vivian, aged 82 years. She was a member of the Methodist society for upwards of 30 years, during which she adorned her profession by an exemplary ..alk, and died exulting in her Saviour.

At St. Austell, on Sunday last, Emily Matilda, youngest daughter of Mr. W. D. Dodge, draper, aged 14 months.

At Hayle, on the 23rd instant, Mr. John Hosking, of Le.., aged 20 years; also, the infant daughter of Mr. Richard Michell.

On Friday last, at St. Mary's Scilly, at the advanced age of 94 years, Mr. Peter Steadiford. He was perfectly sensible and calm to the last.

On the 12th instant, at his residence, Bideford, aged 55 years, Mr. John Sansom, brother of Mr. P. Sansom, Montpelier, a highly-esteemed member of the Society of Friends.

On the 14th instant, at Yealmpton, Devon, at the residence of her daughter, Lady Peyton, Mary, relict of the late Thomas Woodyear, Esq., of the island of St. Christopher, aged 82 years.
