1 NOVEMBER 1839, Friday


On the 25th ult., at the residence of her brother-in-law, Capt. Pengelly, R.N., Strangway's-terrace, Truro, Miss Jeuney, aged 59 years, much and justly regretted by all who knew her.

At Truro, on Tuesday, the 22nd ult., Mr. Wills, aged 67 years.

On Tuesday last, at Penzance, Mrs. Allen, confectioner.

At Colvenor, in the parish of Cury, on Friday, the 25th ult., Mrs. Rundle, aged 57 years; she was for upwards of 30 years a consistent member of the Wesleyan body. Her end was peace.

On Sunday last, at St. Erth Lane, Mr. Job Clemmens, aged 82 years. His death was occasioned by a fall about three weeks ago, when he broke his thigh.

On the 29th inst. of consumption, at Cargantick, in the parish of Lawhitton, in this county, Mr. Edward Brendon, aged 24 years, much esteemed and loved by a large circle of acquaintance.

At Stonehouse, Devonport, Mrs. Mary Hendy, mother of James Hendy, Esq., of Tre..hurffe, in Ladock, aged 77, much respected. In her the poor have lost a most generous friend.

On Monday last, in the village of Helston, near Camelford, Rebecca, wife of Mr. John Pearce, aged 76 years.

On Monday, the 14th ultimo, aged 14 years; at Mr. Haly's Academy, Saltash, after a short but painful illness, Richard, the beloved and only child of Mr. Richard Randall, of the Marine Terrace, Bideford, Devon, in hope of blissful immortality.

On the 27th ultimo, at the Marine Terrace, Bideford, Devon, Mr. Henry Button, aged 80 years, after a painful illness which he sustained with Christian fortitude and resignation. Mr. Button was late of the Parish of Broadoak in this county, and grandfather of the above-named Mr. Richard Randall.

Oct. 19, at Tavistock, at an advanced age, after a most patient and lingering illness, and with the utmost pious resignation, Mar, the surviving eldest daughter of the late Rev. William Bedford, Rector of Marytavy, and sister of the late Admiral Bedford. [name probably is Mary, but Mar is shown. jm]

Oct. 21st, in the 21st year of her age, at the residence of Col. Tufuell, of Sydney-place, Bath, after an illness of only two days, Sara, youngest daughter of the late Rev. W. B. Jeanes[?] of Charnmouth.

On the 23rd ult., at 167, Albany-street, Regent's park, London, after a long and painful illness, borne with the utmost Christian patience and resignation, George Francis Collins Browne, Esq., of Woudley Cottage, and New Mills, in this county.

Recently in the neighbourhood of Paris, after an illness of five days, of the small pox, Mr. Simon Etheridge, a native of Ringwood, Hants - a man much respected by all who knew him. It ought to be recorded that he had the small pox more than 30 years since.

At Dover, on the 12th ultimo, John HANCOCK, Esq., Rear Admiral of the Blue and Companion of the Order of the Bath, aged 73 years. Admiral Hancock entered the Naval Service upwards of 61 years since, and has been well known in all stations as a most zealous and active officer. His conduct at the siege of Copenhagen, promoted him from Lieutenant of the "London" to the command of the "Cruzier," sloop of war, in which vessel he was particularly active on the Coast of Holland; and on attaining his Post Rank, he speedily obtained command of the "Nymphen," frigate, in which ship he distinguished himself at the Walcheren Expedition. He was much esteemed in the service for his social qualities and honest bluntness of character.

At Pit-f., Fifeshire, a few days since, Sir Peter HALKETT, Bart., G.C.H. Admiral of the Blue and late Commander-in-Chief on the West India Station. Sir Peter commanded the "Circe frigate" in the battle of Camperdown; and the following year, in the "Apollo" frigate lost his ship on the Haak Sands, while in pursuit of a Dutch man-of-war - on that occasion his crew were saved by a Prussian gulliot. In 1815, Sir Peter did duty at Portsmouth as Harbour Admiral; he died in his 74th year, and is succeeded in his title and estates by his only son, Commander John HALKETT, R.N. of Uplands, Fareham.

At Helston, on the 31st ult., after a [..] illness born with Christian resignation, and [..] and supported by a humble faith and firm trust [..]of her redeemer, Emm[a], daughter of the late John Gilbert, Esq., of the Isle of [Wi]ght, and sister to W. J. Gilbert, Esq, Assistant Commissioner of Poor Laws.

At Helston, on the 1st instant, of ..us fever, Philip, third son of the late Capt. John ..chards, of Wheal Trumpet mine, aged 16 years.

At Helston, on the 5th instant, [.]lotte, wife of Mr. James Hawke, butcher, aged 34 years.

Last week, at Trannas, in the [parish of] Breage, Mr. John Matthews, aged 42 years.

At Callington, on the 28th ult., [M]ary Ann, daughter of Mr. Richard Lee, of St. Mar[.] near Looe, aged 26 years.

At Lelizick, near Padstow, on the 31st ult., Mr. Thomas Chapman, at the [advanced] age of 93 years.

At Newquay, on the 1st. Mr. William Billing, aged 74 years, one of the [.] fishermen in the place.

At St. Ives, on the 1st instant, Mrs. Sincock, wife of Mr. James [Sin]cock of the Coast Guard Service.

On Monday last, at St. .es, suddenly, Mr. R. Taylor, aged 28, a man much respected in his [. and] regretted by his numerous family and friends.

On the 30th of September, on his passage to Quebec, Capt. John Proctor, of the ship "Roslin Castle," of [.] aged 49. He was [..] years in command of the ship "Susannah," of Exeter in the American trade, and [.] thorough good sailor [..] he has left a young family to mourn his loss, quite unpro[vided] for.

At Falmouth, on the 9th instant, ..Mrs. Nancy May, aged 65 years.

At Falmouth, on Tuesday last, Mrs. xxx Pascoe, aged 35 years, leaving six young children.

At Henworthy, near Launceston, on the 8th instant, William, the infant son of George W. Webber, Esq.

Last week, at Liskeard, after a lingering illness, Mr. Webb, saddler, of that town, aged 53 years.

At Chacewater, on Tuesday last, aged 40 years, Mr. John Hughes, landlord of the Britannia ..

At Binner, in Crowan, on the 8th instant, Mrs. Hoskin, aged 69 years.

At Madron, Catherine Williams, aged 78 years; th[is] poor old woman was account-house cook for upwards of 45 years, in the mines in the parishes of Gwinear and Phillack, and will be remembered by many mine agents, samplers, and miners, with regret.

At Waterford, on the 4th instant, Margaret, relict of the late Arthur Usher, of Camphire, county Waterford,.Esq.

On the 3rd instant, at her mother's residence, Mrs. xx Jolda, Durnford-street, Stonehouse, Maria Wilhelmina Seymour, only child of the late Capt. William Seymour, of the 16th Regiment of Foot, first cousin to his Grace the Duke of Somerset.

On the 30th of October last, at Bideford, Mary lAnn, only daughter of the Rev. J. Heap, Wesleyan Minister, aged 14.

At Plymouth, on the 2nd instant, after a lingering illness, Mr. Francis Blake Bond, late a commercial traveler in the firm of Shepherd and Sutton, London.

On the 12th instant, at Bagborough, Sandord, of brain fever, aged 42, Mr. Geo. Field, inventor of the Sandford Plough, and brother to the well-known Mr. Da[niel] Field, the celebrated ploughman.

On Saturday the 9th instant, after a short but painful illness, in the 37th year of his age, the Rev. John Sutcliffe, the beloved pastor of the Moravian congregation, Devonport. His loss is deeply deplored, not only by his own flock, but also by many friends of other denominations of Christians in those towns, who witnessed his zeal and . in the service of his divine Master.


22 NOVEMBER 1839, Friday


On Thursday, the 7th instant, at Torquay, Louisa, third daughter of the late Sir William Lemon, and wife of Colonel Dyke, formerly of the Coldstream Guard.

On Saturday, the 16th instant, in London, after a short illness, Mr. John Lander, aged 33 years. The deceased was one of the African travelers, having accompanied his late brother Richard on his second visit to that quarter of the globe. On his return, the Government gave him an appointment in the Custom-house at Liverpool, from whence he was removed to London. Mr. Lander, who was a native of Truro, was by profession a printer, and has... by all who knew him. He has left a wife and three children.

At Caleniek[?], near Truro, on Monday last, Mr. Andrew, aged 75 years.

On Monday last, at Cradock, Josiah, son of Mr. Anthony, late of Charlestown, aged 17 years.

At East Looe, on the 19th instant, Edmund, son of Mr. Thomas Fishley, aged 21 years.

Lately, at Burlawn Eglos, in the parish of St.Breock, Johanna, the wife of Mr. William West, aged 58 years.

Suddenly, at Bolingey, in Perranzabuloe, on Tuesday, the 12th instant, aged 46 years, Mrs. Betsey Moore, relict of the late Mr. John Moore, of that place. The deceased was for many years a consistent member of the Wesleyan Society, and was much respected for her deep piety and active benevolence. Her remains were followed to the grave by a great concourse of people, most of whom were deeply affected at the sudden exit of one whom they so much revered and loved.

On the 15th instant at her residence, Princess-place, Plymouth, in the 88th year of her age, Elizabeth, relict of Joseph Fox, M.D., late of Wood Cottage, in this county.

On Friday last, at Boswage, in Veryan, Mr. Thomas Whatley, aged 75 years, sincerely lamented by a numerous circle of friends. His end was peace.

Last week, at St. Austell, Mrs. Biddick, wife of Mr. Biddick, baker, aged 62 years.

On the 15th instant, at Sycamore House, near Birmingham, aged 85 years, William Murdock, Esq., well known in this county some years ago as an able engineer, and as the person who first applied coal gas to the purpose of illumination.


29 NOVEMBER 1839, Friday


On the 20th instant, at Ruanlanyhorne, Jane Keast, aged 101 years.

At Trenance, St. Austell, last week, Jane, second daughter of Mr. George Andrew, aged three years.

At Mount Charles, St. Austell, on Wednesday last, Charles John, only son of Mr. Charles Remfry, aged seven months.

At Tregameer, Elizabeth, the only daughter of Mr. Thomas Hicks, aged nine years.

Last week, at St. Columb, Nanny, the wife of Wm. Langdon, aged 76 years, who fell down in the street and instantly expired.

At Helston, on the 22nd instant, Mr. Wm. Woolcock, sen., wheelwright, &c., aged 58 years, highly respected by all who knew him.

At Penzance, on the 18th instant, Mr. Thomas Roberts, aged 73 years; on the 20th, Mrs. M. Pascoe, aged 20 years, and Mr. T. Smart, aged 64 years.

At St. Ives, on Sunday last, the eldest son of Mr. V. S. Quick, aged 7 years.

At Nancledra, near St. Ives, Mr. White, aged 60 years.

At Bodmin, on Friday last, Mr. Wm. Barrow, cooper, aged 76 years.

At Bodmin, almost suddenly, on Sunday last, Mr. John Phillipps, aged 47 years, for many years a clerk in the Dock-yard, Devonport, and third son of the late Rev. Mr. Phillipps, rector of Lanivet.

On Wednesday last, at St. Erth lane, in the parish of St. Erth, deservedly lamented by all who knew him, Mr. Amos Dabb, sen., aged 63 years. The deceased, about 32 years ago, was chosen master of the St. Erth parish school, and discharged the duties of his situation for upwards of 30 years, with ability and diligence highly creditable to himself, and satisfactory to the parents and guardians of those pupils who were entrusted to his care.

On Sunday last, at St. Erth church-town, Mrs. Amelia Firstbrook, aged 22 years.

At Ladock, Mr. Thos. Cock, aged 75 years, he was much respected by a numerous circle of friends.

On the 11th instant, at Bideford, Mrs. Dalgetty, widow of the late Capt. Dalgetty, aged 58 years.

On the 4th instant, at Backburn, aged 4 years and 9 months, Thomas Edward, son of Major Galloway, of the 10th regiment of Infantry. This is the third son the afflicted parent has followed to the tomb in five years. His only surviving son is the youth educated in the Truro Grammar school, now a Gentleman Cadet in the Royal Military College, at Sandhurst.

On Friday last, at Killerton, near Exeter, at the advanced age of 87 years, Mr. John Veitch, nurseryman.
