19 JUNE 1846, Friday

At his fathers residence TREVENCE, on Saturday last, William, son of Michael WILLIAMS, Esq., in his twenty-sixth years. The deceased was a Lieutenant in H.M. 54th Regiment of Foot, and had served with much credit under the lamented Sir Robert SALE, in India. It was under the harassing duties of his post in the war of Affghanistan, and chiefly during the siege of Jellalabad, that his naturally strong constitution broke down and he was compelled to request leave of temporary absence to recruit his health. But it was to late; the hand of death was upon him; and he returned only to find a grave in his native land. We are reminded by his mournful fate how little we can form and estimate of the miseries of war merely by the number of those who perish on the field. How many are there who, like the subject of this brief notice, end their days amidst the solaces of there home and friends, are soothed in their last moments by the kindliest offices of affection, and sleep in death beneath the trees that shadow their ancestral tombs, yet are as much the victims of war as if they had died at the cannon's mouth, and filled a grave scooped in the desert-sands. Thousands of such are at this moment amidst the homes of England, wasting silently away in the morning of life. To the friend of the Lieut. WILLIAMS, there is left only the consolation of his manly character, and the personal virtues which will long survive in their sorrowful remembrance.
