At Buckfastleigh, on Monday last, the Rev. William EVANS, aged 76 years, formerly of Kilworthy and Parkwood, near Tavistock. How excellent he was in all the relations of life, the sorrow of surviving relatives and friends will well attest. A smile and a kind word were ever on his lips; and while, in the affluence of his conversation, his ripe attainments as a scholar, and his acquaintance with the literature of his own and other countries were perceived, a genuine simplicity was his prevailing characteristic. Born amid the beautiful and wild scenery of South Wales, the valleys and the moorlands of Devon seemed to renew in him the recollections ans associations of his early years; and in the cemetery on the banks of his favoutite Tavy his remains will rest, in compliance with one of his latest wishes. To his many pupils, some of them occupying distinguished positions in society, in the colonies, this brief obituary will recall the noble form of their preceptor, so familiar as their rival in athletic sports; while it will console them by the assurance that the end of their beloved friend was peace, that death came upon him as gently as sleep upon a child, and that he departed, as he had lived, in the spirit in which one must enter the kingdom of Heaven.
