At Hayle Foundry on Tuesday last, after an illness of about two years, Mr Henry HARVEY, the head of the well known and highly respectable firm of Harvey and Co., merchants and founders. Mr Harvey's father first established a foundry at Hayle, about seventy-five years ago. Previously to that time the Cornish mines were generally supplies with castings from Wales. Mr Harvey possessed great business talents having acute perceptions, accuracy of memory, and a sound judgment, united with firmness, energy and indomitable perseverance; he overcame numerous difficulties which opposed the early part of his career, and rapidly developed the capabilities of the harbour of Hayle. Where there were but a few cottages, he has left a town; for a few boats or barges, he has built in his own yard a fleet of vessels, first reclaiming the yard from the sea; whilst his foundries are not surpassed for conveniences and capabilities. He has greatly enlarged the industrial occupations of the whole neighbourhood, and has not omitted to see that the education of the population which has grown under his eye was provided for by day and Sunday schools. Hospitable, courteous and cheerful, he was highly respected and esteemed, and whilst equal to any undertaking, he chiefly confined his attention to the duties of an influential merchant. To a friend who was remarking to him the great success which had characterised his efforts, he said, "I have always made it a rule, whenever I find myself deficient in ability, to endeavour to make it up by industry and perseverance". The improvement of the harbour of Hayle by his simple and effectual system of sluicing, is an enduring monument of his engineering skill and sagacity, and is perhaps the most effective yet applied to any tidal harbour in Great Britain. About ten years, since, with unimpaired health, in the fullness of his intellectual vigour, and after half a century of successful enterprise, he retired from the personal direction of his commercial affairs in favour of his nephews. During the last few years, he amused himself, until an attack of paralysis at Christmas 1847, with the planting of trees, and other out-door employment; but after the attack of paralysis, he was unable to walk without assistance.
