I am researching Joseph Brooks, b. abt. 18 May 1765 in Haddam, Middlesex Co., CT, the s/o Thomas Brooks (IV) and (?). Joseph reportedly had the siblings Charles, Thomas (V), and David. I have no information regarding these individuals.

Joseph m. 14 Feb 1787 in Haddam (1st) Jemima Shaylor, b. abt. 1770 d/o (probably Bezaleel Shaylor and Susannah Bailey), d. 1794/1795. Joseph and Jemima had the following children (all b. in Haddam):

1 Rebecca Brooks, b. abt. 1788, m. (?) Brainard/Brainerd (no further information)

2 Wakeman Brooks, b. 14 Jul 1790, m. (1st) Anna Ely; m. (2nd) Caroline Matilda Rogers (both lines well documented). In two of the censuses for Springfield Twp., Bradford Co., PA, he is listed as Wallace Brooks.

3 Catherine Shaylor Brooks, b. abt. 1792, m. William Mathews (some documentation of descendants)

4 Jemima Brooks, b. abt. 1794, m. Stephen Hubbard (both are buried in Berrien Co., MI)

All four children became members of the Congregational Church of Haddam on 29 Jul 1804.

Joseph m. 11 Aug 1796 in Haddam (2nd) Martha Hubbard (no further information on her). Their children were as follows:

1 Joseph Brooks, Jr., b. abt. 1798 (probably in Haddam)

2 Mary Brooks, b. 1801 in Haddam

3 David H. Brooks, b. 1802 in CT

4 Chauncey Brooks, b. 1804 in MA

5 James Brooks, b. 1810 in MA

6 Edward Brooks, b. 1812 in MA

The families of these children are fairly well documented.

According to a brief family genealogy published for a family reunion in the early 1900s, Joseph was a sea-faring man. However, his situation changed after 1806. He was dismissed by letter from the Congregational Church that year, and he and his family moved to West Springfield, Hampden Co., MA. His son, Wakeman, found a suitable place for a homestead in north central Pennsylvania (later Bradford Co., PA) and moved his family there. Joseph and most of his children followed suit a few years later.

Joseph, Martha, and family made their home in Springfield Twp., Bradford Co., PA. He worked with his son, Wakeman, as a harnessmaker.

Joseph d. 10 Oct 1836 in Springfield Twp. and was buried in Leona Cemetery, Leona, Springfield Twp., Bradford Co., PA, on 13 Oct 1836.

A chart of my descendancy follows:

1 Thomas Brooks (founder) + Alice Mariah Spencer

a2 Thomas Brooks (deacon) + Susannah Arnold

aa3 Thomas Brooks (III) + Mary Smith

aaa4 Thomas Brooks (IV) + (?)

aaaa5 Joseph Brooks + (1st) Jemima Shaylor

aaaaa6 Wakeman Brooks + (2nd) Caroline Matilda Rogers

aaaaaa7 Ruggles Kent Brooks + Sarah "Jane" Warren

aaaaaaa8 Susie May Brooks + Walter Edwin Campbell

aaaaaaaa9 Helen May Campbell + Albert Jonas Dudley Lyon

aaaaaaaaa10 Sue Lyon + Daniel A. Bergquist

aaaaaaaaaaa11 Lynne M. Bergquist + Ralph E. Howell, Jr.

 I have the following questions:

 1. Does anyone know when Jemima Shaylor Brooks d. or where she is buried?

2. Does anyone have any information regarding Joseph's father, mother, or siblings?

3. I have very little information regarding Wakeman's siblings. Any information would be helpful.

4. Is there any further information regarding Thomas Brooks' (founder) family history?

5. Does anyone have any information regarding Martha Hubbard? I do not have any personal information regarding her. Could she possibly have been a relative of Stephen Hubbard who m. Jemima Brooks?

Any information regarding this family would be greatly appreciated.
