From The French Vineyards to Louisiana

Jean Dartes; baptized the 8 Apr 1750, at Castres, France Diocese of Burdens. Son of Pierre Dartes and Marie Garssauts. Jean Dartes arrived at Natchitoches,Louisiana, on a vessel from Bordeaux, France captained by Sieur Jerault. The circumstances that brought Jean to Louisiana, may never be known. Some speculate that he jumped ship when he arrived at Natchitoches , the contract with Naigle states that he was a deserter, still others think that he was kidnapped by the ships captain and sold into apprentice slavery for his passage and a fee. Perhaps he was very brave courageous young man who hired on as a cabin boy and when he got to Louisiana, he decided to stay. Therefore he entered into a contract with Jacques Naigle resident of Natchitoches, Louisiana and a blacksmith by trade, Naigle agreed to pay his passage in return Jean Dartes would serve a 3 year apprenticeship. Naigle promised to see that apprentice Dartes be taught the Christian creed, reading, writing and the blacksmith trade. The contract was dated 18 Sep 1765. It is unclear if Jean Dartes served out his contract being Naigle died about a year later. Apparently he didn't , because the blacksmith trade is never mentioned again.

Contrary to normal migration which was from east to west Jean went from the west to east. We find him in the Attakapas (St. Martinville, La.) where in the census of 1771 he is listed as Jean Dartes, age 19 years old living with the Gravenberg brothers. Sometimes before the 1777 census of Attakapas he married Pelagie Prevost from Ft. Chartres on the Mississippi River in Illinois, daughter of Nicolas Prevost and Marie-Francoise Quebedeaux, in that census he is listed as Jean Dartes age 26 his wife Pelagie Prevost age 20. For years it was thought that Michel Leger dit Richelieu was the son of Jean Leger dit La Rosette and Marguerite Comeau, as originally stated by Bona Arsenault in his book " The History and Genealogy of the Acadians". Stephen White in a letter to a lady in Lafayette, Louisiana, said basically the same thing. However, that was proven to be wrong when he Stephen White, Genealogist, centre d" Estudes Acadiennes, University of Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, discovered while reading Father Yvon Leger's book "L'Acadie de mes Ancetres" that Michel was the son of Jean Leger dit Richelieu and Marguerite Marchand, and not the son of Jean Leger dit La Rosette and Marguerite Comeau. His Family and Baptismal information are listed below, which, comes from the "Le Leger" association. (*1A)

THE HEBERT ANCESTORS of WHITNEY DARTEZ

On April 7, 1604 De Guast sailed for New France with him was Samuel Champlain, Francois Pontgrave and Jean de Biencourt, formed a settlement at Port Royal in Acadia. Currently known as Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, the second European settlement in North America. From this settlement evolved a nation of people complete with their own habits, customs and traditions.

The Heberts are documented early in the history of Acadia. In July 1606, In order to reinforce the colony Jean Biencourt arrived in Acadia with more men, supplies and livestock. On board was Marc Lescarbot, who some say was the first historian on Acadia, and Louis Hebert a druggist, son of the druggist to the former Queen of France, Catherine de Medici. There is no known documents or written history disclosing if he was connected to the Heberts that came to settle in Acadia 30 years later. While Jean Biencourt was in France trying to arrange financial backing for the colony, the English Pirate, Samuel Argall burned the settlement made off with the livestock and all the provision. With winter near the colonist had to hastily build new shelters and store food for the winter. Jean Biencourt arrived on March 21, 1614 to find the fort in ruins and the colony starving. Realizing the food supply and shelter were insufficient for the continuance of the colony. So he deeded all his holding in the New World to his son Charles. In the fall he sailed back to France with a cargo of furs and most of the colonists. On board with Biencourt was Louis Hebert. Neither ever returned to Acadia.

In the winter of 1616-17 Louis Hebert renewed acquaintance with his old friend Champlain, who in 1608 had founded Quebec with Pierre De Guast. Hebert sold his property in Paris, moved his whole family to Quebec to make history as the first farmer in North America and the first settler to support his family off the soil. [1] However, Canada's first farmer has no direct descendants bearing the Hebert name.[2]

5th GENERATION......INDEX

Benoni Hebert; born 1720 in Beaubassin, Acadie son Jean dit Emmanual and Madeleine Dugas, married at Beaubassin 20 Nov 1741 Jeanne Savoie daughter of Francois Savoie and Marie Richard of Port Royal. Belony and his wife, Jeanne Savoie, had taken their family to New Brunswick to escape deportation. There were at least fifteen Hebert families who settled in the Attakapas area during the late eighteenth century. Two of the largest Hebert families in that area were descendants of Belony. Two of their sons later went to Louisiana. It is believed that Joseph-Pepin (m. 1771 Madeleine Trahan) arrived, sometime before 1766 posibably with the group led by Joseph Broussard dit Beausoleil, who with 193 Acadians after their release from British prisons in Halifax, chartered a schooner and departed in late November 1764, after a brief stop at Santo Domingo they embarked on another ship and arrived at New Orleans in late February 1765. They were established in the Attakapas region of Louisiana. Almost all the Acadian names on the 1774, census of Attakapas belonged to this group. His brother, Jean-Charles (m. 1773 Madeleine Robichaux), came at a later date. Both of them settled along Bayou Vermilion and raised their families there. Joseph-Pepin had 3 sons and 10 grandsons to carry on the Hebert name; while Jean-Charles had 3 sons and 9 grandsons. Most of their Hebert descendants stayed around the Bayou Vermilion / Lafayette area.

Belony and his wife, Jeanne Savoie, had taken their family to New Brunswick to escape deportation. Benoni Hebert died at Memramcook, New Brunewick. At lease four of his children travled to and settled in Louisiana.
