Jeanette Packwood Wedgbury

(Nettie Wedgbury McGraw)

Jeanette Packwood Wedgbury (“Nettie”) was the ninth child of William Wedgbury and Elizabeth Wheatland; she was born near Pontiac in Livingston County, Illinois, on September 13, 1868.  She was probably named for the neighbor’s wife, listed in the 1870 census:  Jennie Packwood.  She lived with her family in this area until 1872 when her father moved the family to the Sugar Creek area of Stockland Township, Iroquois County, Illinois.  When her mother Elizabeth died in 1885, she was seventeen years old and still attending school.  Her father moved her and her little sister Carrie to the town of Sheldon in Iroquois County.  She remained in her father’s home until her marriage.

Nettie married David Monroe McGraw on January 9, 1892, in Sheldon.  David, also known as “Roe,” was the son of James McGraw and Mary Hill.  He was born on March 4, 1868, in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana.

David supported the family by working in the towns or cities that they lived in, including, Lyman in Ford County and Old Town and Bloomington of McLean County.  According to the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census takers, he worked as an (grain) elevator laborer, a railroad ticket agent, and a taxi driver.  Eventually, David and Nettie moved their family to the Detroit, Michigan, area, where Nettie’s sister Minnie lived.  The 1936 obituary of her brother Wesley lists Nettie’s residence as Litchfield, Michigan.  Their children all grew up to adulthood, married, and took up residences from Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.

David and Nettie returned to Sheldon at some point, because Sheldon was listed as Nettie’s last residence prior to her  death on March 13th, 1943, and she was laid to rest with her parents and other Wedgbury family members in the Sheldon Cemetery in Iroquois County, Illinois.  David lived on until February 18th, 1957; he died in Kendallville, Noble County, Indiana, where his son Lester had settled.
