Wills & Probates in New Zealand
Following a death in New Zealand, it is common to find a will probated in the local High Court. When the court clears out its files, they are sent to Archives New Zealand ("Archives") for storage.
Archives has an online search engine, called Archway. Probates, and other documents relating to a person's interaction with the government, can often be found with a Simple Search of the person's full name. A successful search will give you the reference needed to order the file for viewing.
Files from Archives can be viewed at the holding office, or a copy ordered. Viewing in person is free, any copying ordered (whether in person or remotely) incurs a charge. At the time of writing (mid-June 2006) the copying charges are very reasonable, but there is discussion of imposing flat fees for remote copying orders. Ask the office holding the file you're interested in for details before placing an order if you want to know more before incurring any charges. |
