Location of St. Clair Bottom, Virginia

John Bishop 1610 Eng-1694 Stamford CT

"John Bishop, pastor of the church, married Rebecca Goodyear
in Stamford, and had eight sons and two
daughters. He served the First Congregational church for
fifty years through many difficult and trying
times in the Colonies. He died in 1694 at the age of 84, a
much respected and beloved clergyman.
Four sons survived along with his two daughters. Their names
were; Stephen, Joseph, Ebenezer,
Benjamin, Mary and Rebecca. Stephen's grandson, Joseph,
along with his family, decided to move
south to St. Clair Bottom, Virginia in 1773. From this
branch of the family have descended the majority
of the contributors of this memorial brass plaque."

St. Clair Bottom lies about 5 miles west of Charlottesville
on route 250 in Ivy, Virginia. Ivy is where the Boars Head Inn
is located. Meachum River is about five miles west of there.

Found this info at Sussex County Courthouse in Virginia. I don't
believe these folks are in my line but they may belong to one of you:

Will for James N. Bishop who was a native of Sussex County, VA,
but who became a resident of Edgecomb County in North Carolina. He
mentions his wife, Mary A. Bishop, his father, the late Henry Bishop,
and his mother, Elizabeth E. Lewis.

Will for James N. Bishop's mother, Elizabeth E. Lewis, probated
in 1869 in Sussex mentions her five children:
Thomas J. Bishop (executor)
William W. Bishop (or William S. F. Bishop according to his
brother, James' will)
Alpha A. E. Bishop (she married William U. M. Taylor on
8/21/1849 in Sussex County according
to records at www.image.vtls.com)
George W. Bishop
James N. Bishop

A few other Bishops married in Sussex:

Joseph A. Bishop married Georgiana Little on Jul. 8, 1862.
(Joseph is mine - he is as far back as I have
been able to go in my Bishop line.)

Hope this helps someone - let me know if you need a copy of something
