Our Churchills from which we came...

Most Churchi(e)lls today are descent from four different branches of Churchi(e)lls. The first was our own Josiah Churchell who was in Wethersfield as early as 1637. Some claim John Churchill of the Plymouth branch was first, however the Plymouth branch of Churchills were not in America until 1648. Next came William Churchall branch of Manhattan, NY and the Virginia branch. If Josiah, John or William Churchill were brothers or related is not known, nor has it been proved yet today that they even knew each other. To set the record straight, we are not related to the famous Winston Churchill line as many would like to believe. We are descended from Josiah Churchell of Wethersfield, Connecticut and his wife Elizabeth Foote. As of today we still have not found proof of parents of Josiah or where he is from..

Josiah or Josias Churchell as he spelled his name, was born in England about 1615, was in Wethersfield early but not among the first settlers. He must have come to Wethersfield at an earlier date and was living there in 1638 when he married Elizabeth Foote daughter of Nathaniel Foote and Elizabeth Deming who were among the founders of Wethersfield. The following is our direct lines from Josiah to Jotham Churchill my maternal gg grandfather who was in Minnesota by summer of 1857.

History of Wethersfield, Vol II page 221
The property on which Joseph lived was inter. from his father and appears to be the home lot described as belonging to Josiah Churchell under date of Dec 1659... In the inventory of the estate of Joseph Churchell his home lot is mentioned as consiting of three acres which would indicate that he passed his life on the homestead given to him by his father. At the age of 30 he was one of the town surveyors; three yeaars later his name appears as one of the listers or assessors; in 1684, he was elected a collector of taxes. In 1689 he was chosen constab le; again in 1695 as lister; at the annual town meeting held Dec 26, 1698, Segt. Churchell was re-elected selectman and was serving in the capacity when he died Apr 1, 1699 at the age 49 yrs. Mary his widow lived to an advanced age as an inventory of her estate was dated July 4, 1738.

Suffolk County Wills, 1708-1728
Josiah Edwards will page 246 - In the name of God, Amen. February 9, 1712/13. I, Josiah Edwards, of the town of East Hampton, in the County of Suffolk, husbandman, being sick in body. I leave to my sons, Josiah, Joseph, Churchill, Jonathan, David and Nathaniel, all my lands, meadows, and rights in Commonage, both at home and at Montacket, with all the privileges. I leave to my wife Mary, and to my daughters Martha, Mercy and Mary, all my movables, both indoors and without. And if my wife lives, and does not marry, then she is to have the improvement of all my lands till my children are of age. My sons are to be put out by my executors to learn suitable trades. If my wife lives till my sons are of age, and they see cause to make improvement of my house, so that she cannot comfortably live in it, then my sons are to pay her £18 yearly. I make Annanias Conkling, Lewis Conkling and my brother, Thomas Edwards, executors.
Witnesses, Samuel Barnes, Nathaniel Barnes, Baker. Proved, August 8, 1721, and the executors having refused, Letters of administration are granted to the eldest son, Josiah Edwards.
Genealogies of Long Island Families, Vol I, Descendants of William Edwards of East Hampton, Long Island page 381
Josiah3 Edwards was son of John2 Edwards and grandson of William1 Edwards as has been shown in a number of records already cited, among them his grandfather's will. He was a Private in Capt. Peter Schuyler's Company in albany in 1692 and died about 1721. His will dated Feb. 9, 1712/13 and proved Aug. 8, 1721 named Ananias Conkling, Lewis Conkling, and his brother Thomas Edwards as executors. The last named refused to act and letters of Administration were granted to the eldes son, Josiah Edwards. In that instrument, Josiah mentioned his sons Josiah, Joseph, Churchill, Jonathan, David, and Nathaniel and his wife, Mary (NY Hist. Soc. Col 1893 page 236). It is evident that Mary (Churchill) Edwards, after the death of her husband, returned to CT with all of her children except the eldes, Josiah, Jr.

A Family Odyssey "The CT Churchills and the Settling of America 1635-1900" by Malcolm H. Churchill
When Giles and his family settled at the forks of the Delaward in 1751, it was unbroken wilderness. By 1765 however the growing white population threatened to inundate the area and the Indians decieded to resist. By this time five more children had been born to Giles and his wife. Warned that the warriors were assembling the Giles Churchills place the mother and younger children on their one horse and their sole sack of meal on their cow and hurried away. Looking abck, they saw the smoke from their log cabin as the Indians burned it. The family made its way to MA probably the Churchill book suggests taking shelter with relatives of the husband or wife. Giles died in 1771 about 53 years of age, in Florida, NY. It is not known where he married or where the oldest children were born, but by 1761 the family was living in Bristol, which is west of Farmington. Sons were born there in 1761 and 1764. The 1790 census shows the family still in Bristol. The presence of Benjamin and his family in Bristol undoubtedly was what led Benjamin's brother Jesse to live there briefly at some point prior to his moved to Hubbardton, VT
Benjamin and Abigail havd seven children, and four of their five sons married: Asahel, Samuel, Ira, and Jedediah. Benjamin's four sons all lived in Bristol for a time after their marriages, but two had been married in Southington, the wife of a thrid was from Southington.

Six of William and Ruth's children were born in CT and two in PA
A Family Odyssey by Malcolm H. Churchill 1999
William and Ruth lived in Farmington, CT until 1769 when they moved to Wyoming Valley of eastern Pennsylvania. when the Wyoming Valley Massacre broke out in 1778, the family escaped going to Elmira, NY then continued on to Westfield, MA eventually reaching CT. Farmington, CT was the home of William's first wife, and it was where the family lived until their 1769 departure for the Wyoming Valley. William had eleven children altogether, five boys and six girls all whom married except for the eldest daughter Jemima.
A Family Odyssey by Malcolm H. Churchill 1999
The Churchill family book asserts that William reclocated to New Jersey, but this appears to have been based on a son's supposed New Jersey birth that later was proven incorrect. In fact the family appears to have resumed residence in CT after the Wyoming Valley Massacre.
Also thanks to Betty Barnes Guthrie for helping put 1.5.5.6 William Churchill and his two wives line together!

Homer is part of what is called the Military Tract, which was created in 1789 by NY State so it could pay its Revolutionary War soldiers in land. Soldiers who chose not to settle their land were allowed to sell it.
About 1814 the family moved near Marietta, (present day Washington co.) OH, Ohio's earliest pioneer settlement, where they lived for nineteen years. By then they had had thirteen children, seven of whom had died. The three oldest of the six surviving children were married by the time of their next move in 1834, to Fabius, St. Joseph, MI. One of the married children Adna, and the two younger ones, Rhoda and James accompanied the parents to MI.

Nine of them lived to adulthood, and seven married, including four sons. The children generally seem to have remained iin Arkansas, though the two youngest sons, William and Joseph Jr. eventually moved to Whitt, TX. His oldest son John, lived at Pineville, AR. Four of his eight children, including twin girls, died as children or youths.

A Family Odyssey by Malcolm H. Churchill 1999
Silas moved to near Marietta, OH with his father's family when he was eleven years old. In Aug 1884, he wrote N.W. Churchill a long letter, which gave much information about his uncles and brothers, but very little about himself. He says he was married a second time, but does not mention the second wife's name or that of his youngest daughter, nor that of his son, his only child by his second wife. He was living in 1884 with Mrs. Ferguson Janesville, Black Hawk, IA (ICH: Silas was listed with daughter Mrs. Robert Fairburn in 1885 Iowa state census)
