Obit - Park Rapids Enterprise - 1938 - Rites for Pioneer Held on Saturday - Baptist Church Crowded for Mrs. Crandall's Funeral - Funeral services for Mrs. Frank O. Crandall, one of the county's oldest settlers, who died Wednesday evening April 27, were held on Saturday afternoon at the Baptist church of this City, Rev. Donald Wagner officiating. The church was filled with friends and neighbors, many of whomhad known and respected this lady during her residence of over a half century among them. There was a wealth of floral offerings. Pall bearers were George Bateman, Harry Pritchard, John Bateman, Leo Skeffington, Charley Brill and Fred Pritchard. Interment was made in the family lot in Greenwood cemetery under direction of H.O. Folkestad. Sarah Jane Ames was born June 12, 1862 in the state of Illinois, the third youngest of a family of nine children. As a small child she moved with her parents to southern Minnesota, where she grew to womanhood. On February 22, 1880 she was united in marriage to Frank O. Crandall of Pine Island, this state. Seven children were born to the union, three sons and a daughter dying in infancy. The family lived two years on a farm at Pine Island and the year 1882 came to Hubbard county, settling on a farm five miles west of town in Todd township where they had lived 56 years. As one of the oldest pioneers, Mrs. Crandall had seen many hardships, but with her sunny and loving disposition and with the aid of her faithful husband, lived and struggled through all. Neigbors came to know her as one always ready to lend a hand in times of sorrow and need and to know her was to become her friend. Mr. and Mrs. Crandall celebrated their golden wedding anniversary eight years ago. Each year since, the anniversary date had been observed. Mrs. Crandall had been in poor health for sometime. She was taken ill with lobar pneumonia living only a week. She heard her Master Say "Well done thou good and faithful servant, enter into thy eternal reward," and her spirit obeyed, at the age of 75 years and ten months. She leaves to mourn her departure and revere her memory, her devoted husband and companion of almost three score years; one daughter, Mrs. Nettie Buss of Park Rapids, two sons Jesse Crandall who lives on the old homestead and Archie Crandall of Marble this state. Three grandchildren are Mrs. Eva Short of Pontiac, Mich., Alice (Alvie) and Glenn Crandall of Todd township. There is also a sister, Mrs. Addie Letcher of Rochester, two brothers William Ames of Brandon, Manitoba, Can., and John Ames of Rochester, Minn. and a host of friends. Relatives and friends from a distance in attendance at the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey Letcher, Mrs. Libby Strife, Mr and Mrs Hugo Bronner and Francis, Lillian and Beverly Hildebrant of Rochester, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Archie Crandall, Marble, Minn.; Mrs. Emma Kaiser, John and Rosella Atcheson and Mrs. Bertha Atcheson, Spooner, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Barthlomew and Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie Hazen, International Falls, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. John Crandall and Mrs. and Mrs. Edd. Crandall, Menahga and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Crandall of Ponsford. He was united in marriage to Sarah Jane Ames in 1880 at Milton, Minn. Seven childrne were born to the untion, 2 daughtes and three sons dying in infancy. The family came to Hubbard county in 1882, making the trip in a covered wagon drawn by two yoke of oxen. The country was heavily timbered at that time and only an Indian trail through the woods led to the land which they took as a homestead. The place was later cleared and a farm developed past which a state, highway was built. Mr. Crandall took an active part in the public life of the community and was held in high regard by his friends and neighbors. Mr. and Mrs. Crandall celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, Mrs. Crandall preceding her husband in death.
