Lord Of Alnwick & Malton Eustace DE LACY
(Abt 1080-1157) |
Lord Of Alnwick & Malton Eustace DE LACY
Another name for Eustace was Eustace FITZJOHN. General Notes: Eustace (nephew and heir of Serlo de Burgh, founder of Knaresborough Castle), one of the most powerful barons and a great favorite with King Henry I. With his two brothers, he was a witness to the foundation of the Abbey of Cirencester in Gloucester 1133. Eustace was the son of John (called Monoculus, from having but one eye). Eustace is said by an historian ofthe period in which he lived to have been "one of the chiefest peers of England," and of intimate familiarity with King Henry I, as also a person of great wisdom and singular judgment in councils. He had immense grants from the crown and was constituted temporary governor of the castle of Bamburg in Northumberland by Henry I. This governorship was taken from him by King Stephen, but he subsequently enjoyed the favor of that monarch.[91502.ftw] Eustace married Beatrice DE VESCI. (Beatrice DE VESCI was born about 1090 in Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, England.) Eustace next married Agnes Fitz-Nigel HALTON, daughter of Lord Of Halton William Fitz-Nigel HALTON and Agnes DE GANT. (Agnes Fitz-Nigel HALTON was born about 1090 in Halton Castle, Skipton, Yorkshire, England and died in 1166 in Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, England.) |
