MARTHA "Mattie" GEORGE STINSON


Mattie was born Aug. 18, 1877, in Canton, Miss., a daughter of William Baxter Stinson Sr. and Catherine Eliza Anderson. She died Sept. 27, 1948, in Canton, Miss. See obituary. She is buried in the Stinson plot, Canton Cemetery, Canton, Miss. On Feb. 14, 1900, she married Alphonse Paul Orrick Sr.

brother, Edward Anderson Stinson Sr.: Born Aug. 12, 1868, in Kirkwood, Miss. Died Dec. 13, 1941, in Canton, Miss. Buried: Canton Cemetery, Canton, Miss. He married Emma Beavers in 1890 in Fort Payne, Ala.
They had four children:
(daughter), Katherine Stinson: Born Feb. 14, 1891, in Fort Payne, Ala. Died July 8, 1977, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Buried: July 12, 1977, in New Mexico National Veterans Cemetery. In 1928, she married Miguel Antonio "Mike" Otero IV. Mike was born Aug. 30, 1892, in Las Vegas, N.M., son of the first territorial governor of New Mexico. He died Oct. 2, 1977. He was buried Oct. 7, 1977, in New Mexico National Veterans Cemetery. Katherine was the fourth woman pilot in the United States to receive a license to fly (Texas FAI license no. 148) at age 21 years, 5 months. The middle school in San Antonio is named for her.




(son), Edward A. "Eddie" Stinson Jr.: Eddie was born July 11, 1893, in Fort Payne, Ala. On Jan. 26, 1932, he was demonstrating a new Reliant model airplane when he died in a plane crash at Jackson Park, Chicago, Ill. He is buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield, Mich. He married Estelle Judy on Oct. 1, 1919, in Pittsburgh, Pa. Estelle was born Feb. 2, 1889, in McKeesport, Pa. She died Jan. 4, 1981, in Los Angeles, Calif. They had no children of their home, however, Eddie did adopt Estelle's son Raymond Judy. Raymond Judy was born in 1911` and died April 26, 1984, in Colorado Springs, Colo. His cremains were buried Aug. 20, 1984, in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield, Mich., next to his stepfather. Raymond and his wife, Anne N., had six children. Eddie Stinson Jr. was a World War I military pilot, Temp O-4 Balloonatic, Wright Field, 1924 Captain, FAI license no. 375, December 1915. Stinson Field in Aberdeen, Miss., is named for him. Stinson Aircraft Co., Wayne, Mich., (near Detroit) was sold to Vultee Aircraft Co. after his death.

(daughter), Marjorie "Madge" Stinson: Madge was born July 5, 1895, in Fort Payne, Ala. She died April 15, 1975, in Washington, D.C. Her cremains were scattered over Stinson Field in San Antonio, Texas. She never married and did not have any children. She attended Millsap College in Mississippi. She was the 9th woman in the United States to receive her pilot's license (FAI no. 303) in August 1914, at age 19 years, 1 month.




(son), Jack Beavers Stinson: Jack was born Dec. 25, 1900, in Canton, Miss. He died May 15, 1976, in Athens, Tenn. His cremains were scattered over Stinson Field in San Antonio, Texas, on July 27, 1976. Jack was an aero engineer, had aviation training school in Long Island, N.Y. He was credited with inventing the auto engine governor. In 1925, Jack married Ann Schnitzer Sugar in Chicago, Ill. Ann, as aspiring ballerina, was born May 17, 1898. She immigrated to the United States by herself in 1914 from Tamishvar, Hungary. A daughter, Irene, was born in 1918. Ann died in October 1987.

Jack and Ann had four children: a daughter, living; a son, Edward A. Stinson III: born April 29, 1927, in Detroit, Mich.; died July 31, 1992, in Hemet, Calif., where he is buried. In 1950, Edward III married Isabel Denton in Alabama and they had six children, of which two died in infancy; and twin daughters, Jacqueline and Geraldine Stinson: born July 26, 1930, in Bridgeport, Conn. Jacqueline married Victor Delano in 1951 and they had two children. She died Oct. 14, 1990, in Maryland. Geraldine never married. She died in 1962.


brother, William "Will" Baxter Stinson: Born Sept. 26, 1870, in Canton, Miss. Died Jan. 20, 1936, in Canton, Miss. He married
Emily Lockie Gilruth. They had five children:

sister, Katherine "Kate" Stinson: Born Jan. 26, 1873, in Canton, Miss. Died Aug. 7, 1958, in Canton, Miss. She is buried in Canton Cemetery, Canton, Miss. She married Dr. McWillie Johnson on Nov. 17, 1896, in Madison County, Miss.

sister, Sarah "Sally" Anderson Stinson: Born Feb. 7, 1875, in Canton, Miss. Died July 19, 1958, in Jackson, Miss. She married Thomas Catchings Holiday on Nov. 14, 1900, in Canton, Miss. They had four children:

(daughter), Katherine Catchings Holliday: Born Feb. 23, 1903, in Glen Allen, Miss. Died Dec. 12, 1953, in Jackson, Miss. She married Andrew Garlan Harris Sr. on Nov. 19, 1928, in Jackson, Miss.
(daughter), Mildred Lee Holliday:Born March 30, 1905, in Glen Allen, Miss. Died May 20, 1954, in New Orleans, La. She married Charles Priestley Fluournoy on Feb. 7, 1929. They had one daughter, living.

brother, Thomas Sidney Stinson: Born Sept. 18, 1880, in Canton, Miss. Died May 15 or 16, 1941, in New Iberia, La. He married Eva Riley Bauer on March 11, 1903, in Natchez, Miss. They had five children.
(daughter), Eva Bauer Stinson: Born June 4, 1906. Died in June 1986. She married Zackery Carnes on Dec. 26, 1936.
(son), Thomas Sidney Stinson Jr.: Born July 19, 1907, and died May 31, 1908, in Natchez, Miss.
(daughter), living.
(son), Louis William Stinson: Born Feb. 29, 1912, in Jacksonville, Fla. Died Sept. 27, 1984, in St. Joseph, La. Buried: Natchez City Cemetery, Natchez, Miss. He married Pauline Middleton McDonald Adams in about 1940. He later married Heddy Anderson. No children were born.
(daughter), Ruth Elizabeth Stinson: Born May 31, 1914, in Jacksonville, Fla. Died May 21, 1994, in Galveston, Texas. She married William Charles Allen on Sept. 25, 1936, in Gretna, La. They had a son and daughter, both living.

brother, Louis Stinson, M.D.: Born June 19, 1882, in Canton, Miss. Died in November 1925, in Jacksonville, Fla. He married Katherine Ely. They had two children:

sister, Annette "Nette" Stinson: Born April 27, 1884, in Canton, Miss. Died Oct. 31, 1967, in Jackson, Miss. She married Wythe D. Lowe Sr. They had two children:

(daughter), Annette Lowe: Born about 1912.

sister, Lila Stinson: Born Sept. 7, 1885, in Canton, Miss. Died in September 1966, in Yazoo City, Miss. She married Albert Shepherd Gardner Sr., a lawyer in Yazoo City. They had one child:

Fourth Generation
WILLIAM BAXTER STINSON Sr.


Born Sept. 18, 1839, in Camden, South Carolina, the son of William S. Stinson and Martha Americus George. He died Feb. 24, 1906, in Canton, Miss., and is buried in the Canton Cemetery. He married Catherine Eliza Anderson on Nov. 13, 1867, in Canton, Miss. W.B. enlisted in the Confederate Army at Corinth, Miss., in 1861. He served with Company G, 18th Mississippi Infantry, under Col. Burt, and was promoted to 2nd lieutenant by election on April 26, 1862; and to 1st lieutenant by election on Aug. 5, 1862. He was wounded in the thigh and captured at Fredericksburg, Va., on Sept. 17, 1862. He retired from the Army of the Confederacy on May 1, 1864.

sister, Sarah Eugenia Stinson: Born Jan. 2, 1835, in Liberty Hill, South Carolina. Died Aug. 7, 1920. She married Capt. John Leroy Jones on May 12, 1852, in Camden, South Carolina. They had five children:

brother, Robert S. Stinson: Born Oct. 21, 1836, in Liberty Hill, South Carolina, a twin to David George. He married Laura Miller in about 1865. They had two children:

Infant Stinson: Born June 1, 1876, died June 8, 1876, in Canton, Miss.

brother, David George Stinson: Born Oct. 21, 1836, in Liberty Hill, South Carolina, a twin to Robert S. He died June 15, 1861, in Vicksburg, Miss.

sister, Susannah Annette Stinson: Born Feb. 14, 1842, in Camden, South Carolina. She married in 1860 to Robert J. Cunningham. They had four children:

(daughter), Sallie Jones Cunningham, born 1870
(son), Robert J. Cunningham Jr.: born 1876. He married Edith Jones.

brother, Lewis James Patterson Stinson: Born Feb. 5, 1845. Died May 5, 1864, possibly in the Battle of The Wilderness, Virginia.


Fifth Generation
WILLIAM S. STINSON

William S. was born Nov. 17, 1811. He married Martha Americus George on Jan. 22, 1834 in Liberty Hill, South Carolina. He was a farmer and a member and deacon of the Presbyterian Church. William died Oct. 1, 1845 in Camden, South Carolina, of typhoid fever. He was buried in the Patterson Family Cemetery, Beaver Creek section, Camden, South Carolina. The cemetery (destroyed several years ago by a timber company) was located to the southwest of Beaver Creek. The graves were enclosed in a dirt embankment, English "haw-haw" style.
