WINDROW'S WILDFLOWERS

Descendants of Richard and Millender Windrow

Richard Windrow, the progenetor, of the Windrow family in TN, was born 1740 in Lousia Co. VA. He married, 1770 in VA, Millender Anthony who was born 1750. Richard died 1806 in Williamson Co. TN and Millender died after 1830 in Rutherford Co. TN. Their children were John, Jane, Millender, Sara, Elizabeth, Henry Brent, and Nancy who married Reverend Lent Brown. There is a will in which the wife and children of Richard Windrow were named.

The Windrow family is remembered for the camp meetings in nearby Rutherford County in the community now known as Windrow. John gave the land for the Windrow Methodist Church and gave a horse to a man to help in its construction. He was apparently very kind toward the people who traveled to the Methodist campground at Windrow. It has been said that he grew fields of cabbage in preparation for the camp meetings. It has also been said that he kept his stock off his wheat and oat fields in order that the grass might grow large and thick for the horses of the persons who traveled some distance for the camp meeting.

John Windrow was born 1772 in Virginia and he probably married a Card since he named one of his children Card. His second wife was Zelpha Thompson of Sampson Co. NC. The children of John were Card, Catherine, Elvira Ann, Travis, Indiana, Sally Ann, Miranda, and John Byars.

Travis Windrow (b. Jan. 31, 1809 d. Jan. 21, 1874 in Rutherford Co.) was married to Catherine Elizabeth Pate. Travis ran the community store at Windrow. Records of purchases at the store have been preserved and may be viewed at the TN State Archieves.

John Byars “Bias” Windrow was born January 2, 1807 in Rutherford Co. TN and married Jane W. Traylor. Jane was born Feb. 1816 in VA. Their children were Sara C., Matilda A., John W., Isaac Newton, Melisa Frances, Joseph Traylor, Louise “Lou” Emma, Martin Luther, and Frances Vashti. There were also two infants, a boy and a girl, who died. Frances Vashti Windrow married Granville M. Rowland.

John W. Windrow was born Aug. 12, 1846 in Rutherford Co. TN and died after 1910. He married Susan Elizabeth Watson March 27, 1870. She also died after 1910. They are buried in the old Windrow Cemetery in the Windrow Community in unmarked graves. Jessie and Willie Gray Windrow tried unsuccessfully to locate their graves several years ago. Children of John W. and Lizzie were Addie Lee who married William H. Dyer, Mary Jane, John “Johnnie” Bice or Bias, William W., Richard “Dick”, Bell, Susie Mary, and Luther.
