Father* | 30 June 1807 | Rev. John C. Freeman |
Mother* | 17 July 1808 | Mary 'Polly' Brown |
Biography* | | Olif Pegg, George W. Freeman's grand niece, who was born in 1905, wrote that he "had five wives and one a sister to Grandpa Bruner's mother [Sarah Jane Edwards] an Edwards and one was a minister in the Separate Baptist Church. He was a southern sympathizer and belonged to the `Knights of the Golden Circle.'" His marriage record to Jane Miller Gilbert Hawkins states that he had been married 3 times. He married Jane only two years before his death. From History of the Separate Baptist Church by Morgan Scott (Indianapolis: Hollenbeck Press, 1901) p. 296, "G. W. Freeman was born in Owen county, Indiana, February 18, 1834, being a son of Elder J. Freeman. He embraced the Christian religion in 1852, but did not openly confess his faith in Christ at that time, but in April, 1856, he united with Salem Church of Separate Baptists. He soon became its clerk, and was also chosen as deacon. In 1864 he moved to Mercer county, Illinois, but at the end of two years returned to Indiana, settling in Owen county. In 1876 he moved to Daviess county. Shortly after this he was elected moderator of White River Association and held that office a few years. In 1890 he was chosen moderator of the General Association of Separate Baptists of North America while in session at Walnut Hill, Kentucky, and served three years. He has been married three times-- first to Polly A. Edwards, in 1853; her death occured in 1866. Second, to Sarena Hash, in 1870; her death occurred seven years later. Third, to Druzilla Darraugh, in 1892. He was present at the organization of the state association and was chosen its first moderator. He has lived in Oakford, Howard county, since 1892, and has been identified with North Indiana Association. 'Amidst persecutions and afflictions he stands firm in the doctrine of the Separate Baptists as taught in the word of God.'" Wyatt Boger, son of Abigail Brown who was a first cousin of George's, wrote in 1927, "He frequently called at our home when he was up in Illinois, and as I remember, he was about a cousin of my mother, and he looked just like my uncle John Brown." |

Biography* | | Douglas Rupe provided this biography, "When Charley and his wife Loll were growing older, their eyesight started failing and they could no longer live alone. Their son Doyle moved them to his home in Wyoming where they both passed away. Before Charley moved away, he told his friends that he was "going west to grow up with the country." In conversations with nephew Vern C. Johnston, Charley said he remembered the day his father went to join in the Civil War. Charley was only four years old as he recounted. His father, William B. Christy, did not want to be drafted and he waited as long as he thought he could, then enlisted. Charley said he remembered as his father left, he walked to the top of the hill near their home, then stopped, and gazed back for a long time. He was most likely thinking it may be the last time he would see 'home again."
