INTRODUCTION TO THE SNODGRASS SOURCE BOOKS The state source books were created by Charlou Dolan. She began this massive project ca. 1986, organizing and typing the accumulation of Snodgrass research when she got "boxes and boxes" of files from Scott F. Hosier (he was Editor of The MACE 1978-1986). Those files formed the nucleus of the "source books". During her tenure as Editor of The MACE, 1987-1993 and since, Charlou has been hard at it: gathering and entering into the source books Snodgrass data, making trips to courthouses and libraries across the country, collecting files & family data from past & present members of The Snodgrass Clan Society, as well as soliciting information from many other Snodgrass researchers. The source books are one of the best tools available to anyone researching Snodgrass. One for every state, each organized by county and within each county, info is arranged by date. These source books contain a wealth of Snodgrass research. Census readings - wills - deeds - misc. court records - marriages - deaths - obits - histories - Bible records - even queries found in genealogical publications... all Snodgrass! Charlou's comments on the collected data are shown as < . > throughout. Any comments marked [ . ] or [vss -] were added by Violet "Suzie" Snodgrass Schoolcraft beginning in 1997, the result of reading the source books and tracing families since I first joined The Snodgrass Clan Society in 1993. Comments marked by [wsj -] were added by Will Johnson. PLEASE keep in mind that the source books are meant to be a reference work - they give us an idea of what has already been found. Perhaps more importantly, they show us where to look next for what is yet to be done! REMEMBER, extractions & transcriptions, notes & comments may have errors or may be missing certain portions of the original material. ALWAYS refer to the original source material whenever possible, using the source books as a starting point to guide you in your individual research. If it is SNODGRASS we at The Snodgrass Clan Society continue to collect it! Please send items (with sources cited!) you want to share with others to: Paul D. Snodgrass, 308 N. Pine Ave., Chicago, IL. Chicago, IL, 25 Aug 1931 Dear Mr. Cole, Please pardon my delay in answering your letter regarding the Snodgrass family. We have been out of the city and my correspondence has been heavy for some time. As to my husband's family. His grandfather was born in Virginia. His name was William. He had a brother Thomas. He left that state, studied law in Ohio, and was admitted to the bar. Doctor Snodgrass's father was born in Miami Co., OH. James was his name--an only child. Dr.'s impression is that his grandfather was born in the vicinity of the Natural Bridge, VA, but we do not know. I have been very successful in tracing many of my own lines, but have not been able so far to establish the Snodgrass line or the data desired. At one time, I was referred to a Mrs. Nora I. Serivner, 110 Vine St., Cynthiana, KY. She is descended from William, James, and Robert Snodgrass. I wrote her and received a very nice letter in reply. She was unable to answer my questions, but hoped to later. I did not hear from her again. Her letter is dated 31 Dec 1927. I have the revolutionary record of a William Snodgrass from a Richmond, VA, genealogist. Sullivan Co., TN, pension roll. He wrote me that William and Charles Snodgrass were the only two of the name who served in the Revolution from Virginia. From the land grant office, Richmond, I received a long list of grants to Wm., Joseph, James, Chas., Robt., and so on Snodgrass (67 in all) Index 1623-1774, 1803-1825, & 1825-1850. I trust the above may be of some assistance to you, and that you may be able to help with our Snodgrass puzzle. My husband had a brother William (older), but he died some years ago. No one was ever more interested in his country than my Dr. Snodgrass. Patriotic blood of the early days runs in his veins. Very truly yours, Lulu M. Snodgrass (Mrs. Edward G.) ===================================================================== ========= ############################################################################## ..head02cCRAWFORD COUNTY -- ## CRAWFORD COUNTY (formed 1816 from Edwards County) CEMETERY RECORDS Crawford Co., IL, Cemetery Inscriptions, vols. 2-3 (Roesler & Bailey) yes CENSUS RECORDS 1850 census transcription - NS 1860 census transcription - NS 1900 census transcription - NS 1910 miracode - yes 1920 soundex - yes HISTORY & GENEALOGY History of Crawford & Clark Cos., IL, 1883 (Perrin) (Indexed) yes (see Clark Co.) Snodgrass, farmer and lumber-dealer, was born December 17, 1837, in Hendricks County, Ind. His parents are John and Minerva (Douglas) Snodgrass, both natives of Kentucky. The father was a farmer, and a Democrat politically. Both parents died in 1878, the former at about the age of fifty-four, the latter at about the age of fifty; she was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. They had six children, five of whom are now living. John W. came with his parents to Cumberland County in 1857, arriving October 17, and settling within a mile of where he now resides. His father bought a part of the farm on which J. W. now resides, and began opening out a farm. Mr. S. has been working for himself since he was about twenty years of age. He was married in December, 1859, to Sarah J. Fairbanks, a native of this county. She is the daugther of Samuel and Fanny Fairbanks, natives of Ohio. The mother is still living in this county, being seventy-four years of age. Her father died in September, 1876, at the age of seventy-one years. To Mr. and Mrs. Snodgrass were born three children. The oldest died in infancy; Mary Frances and Nettie Ann, the other two, are living at home. Mr. S. had for a start $5 in money and two colts. He now owns 114 acres of land, all of which is under fair cultivation. He also owns a steam grist-mill, saw-mill and thresher, all of which are run by the same engine. Mr. S. is doing a good business in his various occupations, and is numbered among the prosperous, responsible and worthy farmers of the county. Mr. S. is a member of Toledo Lodge, No. 355, I.O.O.F. Politically he is a Democrat. Mr. S. is a good neighbor, as kind to the poor perhaps as any person in the county, and is regarded by all as a first-class man. 20 Aug 1886 -- James T.
