INTRODUCTION TO THE SNODGRASS SOURCE BOOKS The state source books were created by Charlou Dolan. She began this massive project ca. 1986, organizing and typing the accumulation of Snodgrass research when she got "boxes and boxes" of files from Scott F. Hosier (he was Editor of The MACE 1978-1986). Those files formed the nucleus of the "source books". During her tenure as Editor of The MACE, 1987-1993 and since, Charlou has been hard at it: gathering and entering into the source books Snodgrass data, making trips to courthouses and libraries across the country, collecting files & family data from past & present members of The Snodgrass Clan Society, as well as soliciting information from many other Snodgrass researchers. The source books are one of the best tools available to anyone researching Snodgrass. One for nearly every state, each is organized by county and within each county, info is arranged by date. These source books contain a wealth of Snodgrass research. Census readings - wills - deeds - misc. court records - marriages - deaths - obits - histories - Bible records - even queries found in genealogical publications ... all Snodgrass! Charlou's comments on the collected data are shown as < . > throughout. Any comments marked [ . ] or [vss -] were added by me, Violet "Suzie" Snodgrass Schoolcraft beginning in 1997, the result of my reading the source books and tracing families since I first joined The Snodgrass Clan Society in 1993. PLEASE keep in mind that the source books are meant to be a reference work - they give us an idea of what has already been found. Perhaps more importantly, they show us where to look next for what is yet to be done! REMEMBER, extractions & transcriptions, notes & comments may have errors or may be missing certain portions of the original material. ALWAYS refer to the original source material whenever possible, using the source books as a starting point to guide you in your individual research. If it is SNODGRASS we at The Snodgrass Clan Society continue to collect it! Please send items (with sources cited!) you want to share with others to: Paul D. Society - 1982 Velma Avenue - Columbus, OH - 43211.2497 - ph. 614.297.2300; their searchable online database] DEATH CERTIFICATES The Ohio Historical Society holds statewide Death Certificates, 20 Dec 1908 - 31 Dec 1944. In order to obtain the Death Certificates you are seeking, please write us (postal service, not e-mail) with the following information, as much as is known: name, variant spelling of name, maiden name, gender, date of birth, date of death (within 10 years if not known exactly), county or city of death, and parents' names. Even if you have the certificate volume/number, it is very helpful to include the above additional information to narrow the search among similar names. Include payment for either UNCERTIFIED (used for medical research, genealogy, etc.) or CERTIFIED copies as follows: UNCERTIFIED Death Certificate copy: Ohio Residents--send a check or money order (no cash) payable to the Ohio Historical Society for $3.18 (includes Ohio sales tax). Non-Ohio Residents--send a check or money order (no cash)payable to the Ohio Historical Society for $3.00. CERTIFIED Death Certificate copy send TWO checks or money orders (no cash): 1) One payable to the Ohio Historical Society for $3.18 (Ohio Residents) or $3.00 (non-Ohio residents). 2) Another payable to "Treasury, State of Ohio" for $7.00 for certification fee. OHS will forward this check with a copy of the certificate to the Ohio Division of Vital Statistics who will send the certified copy to you. STILLBORN: Please note that certificates showing a first name of STILLBORN or STILLBO may have been withdrawn by the Department of Health, Division of Vital Statistics, and retained by them. Please request these certificates singly with separate payment for each, as some orders may not be able to be completed by OHS staff. Orders which cannot be completed by OHS staff will be returned with payment. Send request to: Ohio Historical Society, Archives/Library, Death Certificates, 1982 Velma Avenue, Columbus, OH 43211-2497 Main Web site: http://www.ohiohistory.org/dindex/ OHIO DEATH CERTIFICATES INDEX 1913-1927, and 1933-1937 This database indexes Death Certificates of persons that died in Ohio in the above years, useful for determining date of death and certificate number. Using the index information, a researcher can later obtain a copy of the certificate itself, which holds further information.
