EARLY YEARS IN OXFORD TWP., PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA

Marriage to Martha Glyn

Our earliest record of Hill Freeburn (Freeborn) is of his marriage to Martha Glyn (Glen) on 27 Oct 1768.  This reference is found in the records of historic Christ Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Note

Earlier researchers were unable to find any information regarding Hill’s wife Martha Glyn (a.k.a. Glynn).  I have found several marriage listings for the name Glyn including one at Gloria Dei Church where Hill & Martha’s first child was baptized.  These marriages I have listed on a separate page.

Martha Glyn Ancestry

Hill's wife Martha Glyn (Glen) was the daughter of Robert Glen and Catharine Keen.  The Keen ancestry is quite remarkable and the Keen ancestry in America begins in 1643 when Joran Schneeweiss (later Joran Keen) landed with Gov. Johan Printz in New Sweden. If you have arrive at this point from the Keen website then you know the story.  If you have not then I suggest you click here and learn about the amazing history of Joran Keen, founder of Chester, Pennsylvania.

Glen Family Mystery

I have not been able to find the parents of Robert Glen although there were a number of Glen families in the Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland area.  In the course of my research however I have had the pleasure of exchanging emails with Marilyn Szum.  Based on information by Thomas Allen Glenn she indicates that:

By the way, Robert Glenn and Katherine Kyn had I think two sons and a daughter.  I am using Thomas Allen Glenn as my source.  He seemed to put two sons for them, named James and John and a daughter Martha.     Robert Glenn died 07 Sep 1794, per the Am Daily and Gen Advertiser, Philadelphia, Marriage and Death Notices 1791-1799 comp by KRB 1891.

Thomas Allen Glenn believed James Glenn their son was the one who married Mary Tindale or Lindale.  Their son John he believed was John Glenn who married Jennie Hunter.  I have a lot more if you are interested.  I would like to know what you have to add to my database.

She also sends me this information on John Glenn, purportedly the son of Robert and Katherine Glen which information I have recorded here as a footnote for future researchers.

Baptism of First Child

Most sources that reference Hill Freeburn, our patriot ancestor, seem to indicate that he moved to Dauphin County and that most of his children were born there.  We now know that his first son was in fact born in the Philadelphia area.  He was baptized on 26 Aug 1769 in the Gloria Dei (“Old Swede Church”) which still stands in Philadelphia. I now believe that most or all of his children were born in Philadelphia and the surrounding area and not in Dauphin County as earlier researchers indicated.  Before turning to Hill's Revolutionary War service I would like to talk a little about Oxford Twp.
