My tour at the 678th AC&W Squadron, Tyndall AFB Florida, began
in March 1958 and lasted until October 1959. This was my
first assignment out of radar maintenance (303x2) school.
Here I had the opportunity to work on both the FPS-20
and FPS-6
. The main
display units were the UPA-35
and the
OA-99
.
I also had the opportunity to work at the radio communication
receiver site working with the R390
vhf receiver and the
GRC27-R278B
uhf receiver for about
3 months.
My last 9 months at the 678th, I was assigned to training and
working with the GPA-37 system,
an analog computer with a magnetic drum for memory,
The system was full of vacuum tube multi-oscillator circuits using
12AX7 tubes. This system was used for computing speeds and
intercept off-sets. It also had the capability to send instructions
straight to the aircraft using the GPA-34 Data Link console. The display
console was the the GPA-23.
.
My next assignment was to the 642nd
AC&W Squadron, Red Cliff, St. John's Newfoundland.
