Subject: WILLIAM LEWIS - WASHINGTON CO. NC (TN) 1750-1838

Hello Karen I wrote to Joseph Payne about the possible connection of SOLOMON LEWIS and FIELDING LEWIS, in Claiborne Co TN, both had come from North Carolina and were of similar age. FIELDING LEWIS (PLF:8L225) was born 15 May 1768 in Virginia, but raised in Wilkes Co.NC by his uncle GEORGE LEWIS= (PLF:833L100).=20

SOLOMON LEWIS (PLF:570L100),was born in Cumberland Co. NC 1750. He was living in Surry Co. NC, at the time of his first enlistment in the Revolutionary War, and served several 3-6 month enlistments, amounting to a total time of 2 years 6 months. He was supposed to have been at Kings Mt. and the Guilford Court House battles. This would have put him in the general area of NW NC and East Tenn. in 1780. He was also married to CATHERINE MOON in 1780 in NC, but no record as yet, except his pension claim. CATHERINE MOON was also born in Cumberland Co.NC in 1759. After the war, (no dates), he moved to Henry Co.VA., then he moved to Washington Co.TN, in the Greasy Cove area, next to or with, WILLIAM LEWIS. SOLOMON LEWIS shows up at the estate sale of THOMAS HOWELL, in 1806, with WILLIAM LEWIS, and on the taxables in 1807 and pays taxes on 100 acres.

This WILLIAM LEWIS (PLF:555L100) has been my target and, I believe, my ggggrandfather. SOLOMON LEWIS had two daughters, ELIZABETH"POLLY"LEWIS (b. 1 Jan 1781) and CATHERINE"MOLLY"LEWIS (b.ca1782). They married DAVID ROGERS (b 3Oct1779) and WILLIAM ROGERS (b.ca1778),respectively, and moved to the Speedwell area of Claiborne Co.TN, with their husbands father, JOHN ROGERS (b.ca1750) originally from Wythe Co.VA. JOHN ROGERS supposedly, also fought at Kings Mt and lived in Washington Co.TN prior to moving to Speedwell in 1798-99. JOHN ROGERS is said to have had three wives, with a total of 25 children. His first wife was supposed to have been a BRITTIAN (BRITTON), the second an ASHER, and the third is unknown.There is record of JOHN ROGERS marrying ELIZABETH ASHER in Washington Co.TN, 17 Jan 1788 (Wash Co. Wills & Marriages Vol.O, pg 110). DAVID and WILLIAM ROGERS stayed in the area of Speedwell, with their families, but many of the children moved to Missouri, Virginia and other parts of TN.=20

Some time after 1807 SOLOMON and CATHERINE LEWIS moved from Washington Co. to the Speedwell area of Claiborne Co., living with, or near, DAVID and ELIZABETH (LEWIS) ROGERS the rest of their lives. JOHN ROGERS died 5 Jan 1822, and never applied for a pension. SOLOMON LEWIS applied, and was allowed a pension, 22 Dec1832,claim R-6309. SOLOMON and CATHERINE had more children than the two daughters, but the only other LEWIS in the Speedwell area was SOLOMON LEWIS JR in the 1830 census (Cl-143), next to JOHN ROGERS JR (Cl-143), both ages 30-40, with families. No record of other children. SOLOMON LEWIS SR was living near DAVID and WILLIAM ROGERS families (Cl-138-139) in 1830 census. SOLOMON LEWIS died 6 Mar 1843, at the age of 97 years. CATHERINE LEWIS died 25 Aug 1845 at the age of 86 years.There was mention that a grandson lived in Missouri, when SOLOMON died in 1843. JESS ROGERS was the administrator of CATHERINE"S estate, no relationship recorded, but believe he was her grandson. =20

WILLIAM LEWIS (PLF: 555L100) of Greasy Cove,Washington Co.NC, was born ca 1750-55. There could be a link with WILLIAM and SOLOMON in Cumberland or Bladen Co's NC. WILLIAM LEWIS first shows up on the Wills and Inventories of WASH. Co. NC, at the Estate sale of JACOB BROWN in april of 1786. August of 1786 William Lewis shows up on the voters roll in Jonesboro,Wash.Co. NC. WILLIAM LEWIS has a Land Grant of 440 acres on Cedar Creek, next to PHAROAH COBBS line, then south to YOUNGS line, then east to WARDS line and then north to starting point.This land grant was transcribed by the entry taker, No.780, on 7 Aug 1787 to ROBERT LUCAS, but in fact, the North Carolina Archives have No.780 listed, and granted, to WILLIAM LEWIS.The same day NATHAN LEWIS was granted 200 acres on Gap Creek, No 776. No relationship has been established between them,if any exists. Pat Alderman, who was a local Historian for UNICOI Co, which is part of the area of the old Greasy Cove, stated that "most of the early Greasy Cove residents had participated in the battle at Kings Mt." WILLIAM LEWIS is on all the taxable lists , that survived between 1788 and 1811. In 1788 WILLIAM LEWIS'S neighbors on the tax rolls were, JAMES WARD, JOHN YOUNG, and JOSEPH YOUNG. These were taken in CAPT GUDGERS district by ROBERT LOVE, also a King Mt. veteran and prominent in Washington Co politics.=20

Though I can't find any records of pension, or application for pension for WILLIAM LEWIS, I'm sure he was very active in the local militia, which was headed primarily by COL JOHN SEVIERS. In the spring and summer of 1793, there were increased attacks on isolated settlers in Washington Co. and Col. John Sevier gathered a large unit of mounted militia and headed south to the Cherokee settlements and towns, and to the Battle of Etowah. SEVIER left approximately the 25 Sept 1793. On the 10 Oct 1793, while Mr. WILLIAM LEWIS was away from home, a band of twenty- eight Indians, in the early morning, attacked and killed MRS LEWIS and five of her seven children. One son managed to get away to the cane brakes along Indian Creek and make his way to the Blockhouse in the Temple Hill area. He reported the attack to a young Lt. NATHANIEL TAYLOR, who pursued the Indians to the French Broad River, but without success.=20

The Indians took a young daughter of WILLIAM LEWIS, who was later ransomed for a rifle and some powder. This was recorded in the Knoxville Gazette, 23 Nov 1793, Vol.2 No.25,pg 3, col.1-2, and in 2 Jan 1794, Vol.3 No. 2, pg 2, col.1-2 . WILLIAM LEWIS' house and barn were burned down by the Indians during the attack and were located on the south end of Indian Creek . There is a Creek named "GRANNY LEWIS", where his farm was supposedly located, that runs into Indian Creek. The 1799 taxables list WILLIAM LEWIS SR and WILLIAM LEWIS JR. This is the only reference to the son who escaped and reported the massacre. I don’t know the name of MRS LEWIS or any of the children that were killed. The daughter who was ransomed was supposedly MARY 'POLLY' LEWIS born ca 1790. MARY LEWIS married CANADY RIGSBY (WRIGSBY) in Carter Co. in 1809. WILLAIM LEWIS SR , as was tradition, remarried very soon after the incident. His second wife name was SARAH 'SALLIE'_________. They started a second family that produced three more daughters and three more sons. WILLIAM LEWIS, by his first marriage, had WILLIAM LEWIS JR (b ca 1778) and MARY"POLLY"LEWIS (b ca1790). The first child born of his second wife is uncertain, but I think it was LOUCRETIA LEWIS (b ca 1794-95) -This is totally unsubstantiated! =20

Next was ELIZABETH "BETSEY" LEWIS (b 1796), BENJAMIN LEWIS (b1798), HIRAM LEWIS (b1800), RUSSELL LEWIS (b 1804) , KESIAH LEWIS (b 1807). WILLIAM LEWIS JR married unknown-possibly lived in Knox Co. MARY 'POLLY' LEWIS married CANADY RIGSBY, Carter Co TN 1809. LOUCRETIA LEWIS married unknown ,possibly JOHN JULIN (JULIAN)Knox Co TN. ELIZABETH 'BETSEY' LEWIS married JOHN HUTCHINS (HUTCHINGS) White Co TN, ca 1814. BENJAMIN LEWIS married CHARITY-------------- ca 1820, possibly White Co TN.HIRAM LEWIS married ELIZABETH JANE CAROLINE KIRK,ca1821 White Co TN. RUSSELL LEWIS married DELILAH MOORE, ca 1830 White Co, Rutherford Co TN. KESIAH LEWIS married JOHN RIGBSY, ca 1825 White Co TN.

The next record WILLIAM LEWIS appears in is 1806, on the 27th-28th of June, at THOMAS HOWELLS Estate Sale and SOLOMON LEWIS is also there. This was recorded in the Wills and Inventories of Washington Co TN, pages 179-180. WILLIAM LEWIS bought one old Razor and one old Bed Tick, while SOLOMON LEWIS bought 5 Bushels corn. CHARLES HUTCHINS was there, his son JOHN HUTCHINS married ELIZABETH"BETSEY" LEWIS, WILLIAMS daughter. THOMAS RIGSBY was there with JAMES RIGSBY. Two of WILLIAM LEWIS' daughters marry RIGSBYS. JOHN DILLARD and ROBERT LOVE were there also. The HUTCHINS ,DILLARDS and LOVES had married into each others families and were close. They were from Culpepper Co. VA .Unfortunately I've been unable to link any connection to these three families with WILLIAM LEWIS, until they all arrive in Washington Co NC(TN) in the 1790's.=20

There was a Will from Bath Co NC-"Abstracts of Wills-1690-1760" by GRIMES, and lists: WILLIAM LEWIS- Wife -MARY LEWIS 1731-5 AUG 1732-Sons: WILLIAM LEWIS JR & SOLOMON LEWIS. Daughters: ELIZABETH (LEWIS) SINCLAIR, MARY (LEWIS) DUDLEY, MAGDALENE (LEWIS) BIGFORD, & EDITH ' EDY' (LEWIS) BENSON - There is the possibility that the families are connected. The names of HANSON LEWIS (PLF:15L922) ,in relationship to JOSIAH LEWIS (PLF: 15L936),JAMES LEWIS (PLF:15L937b) AARON LEWIS (PLF: 15L937a) are recorded in BLADEN Co in the 1763 Census. HANSON LEWIS shows up as follows:' Deeds 10 May 1794 of New Brunswick Co. NC, 120 acres on "OLD TOWNE CREEK", part of 320 acres Patented to WILLIAM LEWIS, 9 Dec 1735. JOSIAH LEWIS SR had deeded SARA SMITH 100 acres, and SOLOMON LEWIS purchased 120 acres, with the remainder 100 acres as HANSON LEWIS'S.' Again, there is only name linkage and commonality, but no substantiating records. Back to WILLIAM LEWIS of Greasy Cove, TN, I find him on the taxables until 1811, at which time he and the RIGSBYS, HUTCHINS and probably others, moved to White Co, in the Cedar Creek area, outside of Sparta TN. Again, he is found on the Taxables for 1812 for White Co and several Deeds and Land Grants are listed in the next few years. The 1820 & 1830 Census's shows the HUTCHINS, RIGSBYS, JULIANS and LEWIS' in the same general area of White Co, and that they purchased lands in WARREN Co and DEKALB Co. WILLIAM LEWIS died Aug 1838 and his will was probated at that time. BENJAMIN LEWIS was the Executor of the Estate. WILLIAM was possibly buried in the NORRIS- POLLARD-BAIN Cemetery by Walling, White Co ,TN, no markers were found. The Will mentions the children of his second marriage and three grandsons that were living with him. The grandsons were DENNIS JULIN (JULIAN), JAMES W. JULIN and GEORGE W. JULIN . These three JULINS (JULIAN) grandchildren are thought to have been LOUCRETIA'S, again = speculation.

The following names are of interest in Washington Co NC(TN) area during the 1770's-1800's:JOHN LEWIS, JAMES LEWIS SR & JR, NATHAN LEWIS, AARON LEWIS, NATHANIEL LEWIS,TURLES or (SURLES) LEWIS, 'KAN' (RIGSBY) FOSTER, WILLIAM & JOHN BLEVINS, GEORGE CLOUSE, CHARLES HUTCHINS, THOMAS RIGSBY, ROBERT LOVE, ZACARIAH ISBELL, GEORGE & WILLIAM RUSSELL, JOHN ROGERS, SOLOMON LEWIS. The William Lewis from New Hanover County you mention in your website is my direct ancestor. This is not the same William Lewis that lived in Washington Co. William Lewis, Jr.'s children were James, Mary, Jane, Jacob, and William III.

Hello,
I am very interested in your site. My grt grandfather was Thomas Neuton
Lewis who was born in MO in 1855. Family traditions says his father was
Solomon Lewis.
By 1860 Solomon and his wife were both dead and all the children were farmed
out to different families. I have been looking for the parents of Thomas
Neuton Lewis for 10 years. Thomas has no birth or death record. He married
into the Barrett line which came out of old Lincoln Co., N.C..
Thomas had two sisters, Viney (Lavina) and Louisa. These sisters
married into the Hovis and Punch/Puntch families. Both of these families are
from N.C. Solomon owned land in Stoddard County according to family
tradition. I am unable to location any land records. This is my mother's
line.
My father's line was from Claiborne, TN. John Stuard/Stewart/Stewart
who married Mary Miller in Claiborne, TN in 1812. 1st child born in 1813 in
Knox Co., KY. John served in the war of 1812 enlisting in KY. In the 1850s
he filed for a land grant and was awarded land in Duck Creek township,
Stoddard Co., MO. John and Mary's son, John Steward lived and died in Duck
Creek township, Stoddard Co., MO.
My parents married in Stoddard Co., MO. If you have any additional info
on the Lewis and Steward/Stewart line I would greatly appreciate hearing from
you. If anyone else connacts you about these lines please give them my

Excerpt from "Old Time Tazewell" by Mary A Hansford. She wrote sketches of the people she remembered who lived in Tazewell before 1850.

Fielding Lewis, Sr. came to Tennessee in an early day. He was a native of North Carolina. He owned a large boundary of land about 7 miles west of Tazwell, known as the Sandlick. David Carr is living at the old homestead of said Lewis at present. He was a very wealthy man. He owned many hundred acres of land adjoining the Sandlick farm. He owned many servants also, and what was best of all, he was highly esteemed as an honorable man and a first-class citizen. His wife was Miss Mary Gambol. They raised a family of six sons and six daughters: William, George, Jessee, James, Peter and Charles. The daughters were Elizabeth, Polly, Sallie, Franky, Isabel and Martha.

b. in Virginia May 15, 1768 (not 1767) according to an entry in a notebook kept by his grandson, 8L521 Christopher James "Kit" Lewis in which Kit entered the birth and death dates for several of his relatives. See page 731, Vol V for a copy of the original as written by Kit. This notebook is now in the possession of William (Bill) Beaver, Granby, Missouri, a grandson of 8L1171 Mary Frances (Lewis) Capps.

Fielding Lewis died August 26, 1852 at Sandlick, near Tazwell Tennessee, according to a letter written from Elizabeth (Moore) Lewis, the wife of 8L504 Charles Lewis, son of Fielding Lewis. He was buried at the Head of the Barren Church Cemetery, but the exact location is not known, if a tombstone existed, it was probably destroyed during the Civil War by soldiers that occupied the church. The names of the parents of Fielding Lewis and where they lived in Virginia have not been proven. One family tradition is that 8L102 David Lewis had a son, Fielding, who disappeared while living near Winchester, Virginia. A part of this same tradition is that there was another son, 8L225a David Lewis, but this also was not proven. Another somewhat different family tradition is told by Rosanne Lewis McCandless. She states that Elizabeth "Betsey" Moore Lewis, wife of Charles , that Fielding Lewis was born in or near Fredricksburg, Spotsylvania County, VA. George Lewis 833L100 George Lewis could be father or uncle of Fielding Lewis who had formerly lived in Culpeper County, VA before moving to Wilkes County, NC just prior to 1777 which is about the same time that George Lewis first appeared in Wilkes County, NC. The William Gamble family also lived in Wilkes County, NC.

"My mother at one time told me that her grandfather, Fielding Lewis told her that he came here from Virginia. That his Uncle George told him and his brothers about the fine lands he had surveyed in Kentucky; that when they got to Cumberland Gap, they heard of a settlement at Fort Butler...and that they went from the Gap down to Fort Butler to stay a few days. While there he concluded to locate there, that his brothers went on into Kentucky and he went with them as far as the Cumberland River. That his brothers went up the River and William said he would go on to Boonesboro, that he'd never seen or heard from them afterwards...

"There is a grave of a John Lewis in the graveyard hear the Methodist Church at Chad, about 2 miles blow the present town of Cumberland. My recollection is that he died near 1850 and I am of the opinion that he was the brother that came with Fielding from Virginia. There are many Lewises now in Harlan. They claim there are two sets of them that cannot trace their relationships. But many of them are descendants of the John mentioned...Mother did not say that his Uncle George he mentioned claimed to be George Washington, but Washington did survey a great many tracts of land in Kentucky and practically every river bottom in Pell and Harlan Counties above Pineville. A similar account about Fielding's first trip to Tennessee is given by Martha Moore Jordan, Route 4 Box 4605, Stigler, OK 74462, in her treatise on SAMUEL MOORE, HIS FAMILY AND DESCENDANTS.

"Fielding was raised in North Carolina and in 1790-1791 married Mary Gamble, born 1773 Virginia. Allegedly, Fielding and his two brothers left for Kentucky ca 1792-1793. They arrived at the Clinch River in Tennessee too late at night to cross over. After spending the night, Fielding looks over the land and decides to stay. The two brothers continue on and nothing more is recorded of them "

While these two accounts of the trip to Tennessee varies in some of the details, the essential facts are the same and lend credence to this being how Fielding, ca 1792 or 1793, moved his family Westward across the Blue Ridge Mountains to Sandlick, about 7 miles West of Tazewell, TN.,in then Granger, now Claiborne County, TN. where the lived the rest of their lives. It should be noted that the Clinch River is about 25 miles from the Cumberland Gap and that Tazwell is located between the Clinch River and the Gap and is very likely the area where Fielding and his brothers spent some time before John and William went on into Kentucky and Fielding never saw them again.

While 2 of Fielding's brothers have possibly been identified, based largely on family traditions, Fielding's parents and sisters are still unidentified. However there are two additional items of data that may eventually help to identify them. It is known that Fielding had at least two sisters living in North Carolina in 1850 when Fielding went from his home in Sandlick, TN to North Carolina to visit them. A letter dated November 18, 1850, written by one of Fielding's sons to another son, Charles Lewis, Linn Co., MO said:

"Brother Charles I will now say something concerning your father and mother. They are well as much as people of their age. The old man went, this fall, to North Carolina to see his sisters and found them well, so I am informed." In this letter, there is no mention as to their names, where they lived, etc.

There is a possibility that Fielding's name was not just Fielding Lewis, but T. Fielding Lewis. On May 16, 1870, Fieding purchased for $1.00 in Claiborne County, Tennessee, a book 'HISTORY OF VIRGINIA by J. W. Campbell, published by J. W. Campbell in 1813. Some of the handwritten entries, apparently made by Fielding, seem to indicate his name was T. Fielding Lewis. This HISTORY OF VIRGINIA book passed from Fielding to his son 8L503 George Washington Lewis, to his son 8L521 Christopher James Lewis, to his son 8L1174 George Erwin Lewis and is now in the possession of Mrs. Dixie Haase, Granby, MO.

If his name was actually T. Fielding Lewis, it could explain why his son 8L317 Fielding Lewis when writing letters, even before his father's death, never signed his letters as Fielding Lewis, Jr. as was true in his May 8, 1852 letter to his cousin "Alphred" which was signed merely "Fielding Lewis."

When reviewing Clairborne County Court records for 1800-1840, there were many instances where Fielding Lewis was appointed Juror of Circuit Court sessions. Most of those notations were to appoint Fielding Lewis as a "Jury" membor to "view and lay out" various roads in the surrounding area. It is obvious that in addition to a landowner, Fielding had expertise as a surveyor as did decendants of Betty Washington Lewis and Fielding Lewis. George Washington's main profession was that of a surveyor.
