Woolsey's in Sonoma, California

Woolsey's in Sonoma, CA

by Brad Woolsey

1) Woolsey Road has been around since the late 1890's. Not yet sure of exact date.

2) Found 'locality' of Woolsey. At one time it was a small community (around turn of century), though not quite a 'town'. Appears on old maps as a location 1/4 mi. S of River Rd. on Laguna Rd. This has been carried forward by modern mapmakers (i.e. in Thomas Guide of Sonoma/Marin Co. map G (rectangle 127) and p.115 .

3) Walked/drove around location and found a Druid's Lodge, old schoolhouse from 1910, and a cluster of old farmhouses and barns still occupied/in-use. Italian winery in same family (Martini & Prati) begun in 1880's still there. Area is now called Vine Hill.

While this is sketchy, I thought I'd follow up w/Sonoma Historical Society to obtain a little more detail/specificity.

Woolsey names in Sonoma relate to Ezra Wooodhill Woolsey who was 65 in the 1890 census or to his son Edgar Woolsey (or some combination thereof) who was 33 at the time. - Sincerely, Brad R. Woolsey

Woolsey Road is located in the Russian River Valley, Sonoma County, CA., a mile or so East of the old settlement of Woolsey, home of Rev. Ezra Woodhull.

Note from Wilford Whitaker:

The Rev. Ezra Woodhull Woolsey (md Martha Ann Weeks) was the son of Nathan Woodhull Woolsey and Letitia Conklin. Nathan Woodhull Woolsey was the son of John (The Sweet Hollow Giant) and Phoebe Rogers, of Huntington, Suffolk, New York. Thus, Ezra Woodhull Woolsey was the grand son of John Woolsey (The Sweet Hollow Giant) and Phoebe Rogers. [I am still trying to find out why he was called the "Sweet Hollow Giant". They lived in an area of Huntington called "Sweet Hollow" but haven't learned why he was called a "Giant". He must have been pretty big.)

John (III) Woolsey who md Elizabeth Bradshaw had a son James Bradshaw Woolsey, who went to California during the Gold Rush. James Bradshaw Woolsey md Hannah Melissa Reeve and they lived and died in Berkeley, Alameda, California, where there is a Woolsey Street.

James and Hannah had at least three sons who became doctors in that area (one a dentist).
