African American History in the Woolsey Family

African Americans in the Woolsey Family

There are 136 individuals identified as "Black" in my database. Interestingly enough, the most African Americans named Woolsey seem to be in New Jersey, followed by Alabama. African Americans named Woolsey have been found in the following states:

Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma [Cherokee Nation], Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia.

At this time, I am not corresponding with any African Americans named Woolsey, but would be happy to do so. If, in your researches, you run across any African Americans named Woolsey, please send the information to me. Thank you.

The 1870 census is the first census to name African Americans by name. I had the opportunity of meeting Alex Haley in the Salt Lake Family History Library when he was there doing research for his "Roots". I can still remember meeting him and thinking "How in the world is he going to trace his family back?" But using what he could find and tradition and family stories, we all know how successful he was.

I am currently researching the Woolsey surname. My Woolsey's are in Rains County, Texas: 1880,1900,1920 Oklahoma 1920 and parts of Arkansas and Alabama. They are listed as Black and Mulatto. The names are as follows: Arelia Woolsey (AL), her son Jim (James) Woolsey(AL) and wife Ida White. Arelia married Henry Malone (AR). I have been corresponding with a woman who believes her White Woolsey's and my Great-Great Grandmother Arelia Woolsey is the African American link for our two families.
