A quick synopsis for Amos:
James Jeremiah Woolsey, son of Richard Woolsey b. 11 Oct 1769 and wife Mercy Mosher, wrote a letter to his nephews in the mid 1880's when he was over 80 years old about the Woolsey family. His statements about Richard Woolsey b. 1730 are:
"Again I find on a slip of paper whence obtained I cannot tell that our Grandfather & Great Grandfathers names both were Richard."
"Now again looking homeward am I right in saying our Grandfather Woolsey's name was Daniel? I think so yet sister Sarah says Richard." [This is Sarah Woolsey who married Henry Woolsey, son of Benjamin Woolsey and Margaret Teller.]
"Our Grandfather Woolsey's name--Daniel or Richard he had children viz. Daniel, Jonathan, Fowler, Richard, James, Cardinal, Sally, Jemima." Information on their children also given.

Amos Woolsey (about 1784-1860), is said to have first married a Phebe Briggs. This statement is found in his son Joseph Benjamin Woolsey's biography, printed in The History of Greene and Jersey Counties, Illinois; published in 1885. Joseph died in 1881, and the statement is not attributed to anyone, although it was likely Joseph's son, George who reported it to the publishers, as he was living in Jersey County, when the book was published. Aside from this there is no other source for Amos marrying a Phebe Bailey.

But there is another possibility for Amos' wife - Joseph's mother. It was published in 1903 in the Daughters of the American Revolution Magazine. In it, is a list showing Amos Woolsey married a Phebe Bailey, whose father is Jacob Bailey and mother is Bathsheba Brush. They were from Long Island, New York, and moved to Delaware County, New York.

Only one of these statements can be correct, and to paraphrase Woolsey researcher, Wilford Whitaker, "Not all MYTHS can be proven wrong, but the preponderance of the latest evidence indicates an alternative explanation. "

Let's compare the two sources.
George Woolsey's statement: - his Grandmother was Phebe Bailey. Was this from memory? Who's, George's or Joseph's? If it was George, he was likely told by his aging Father, Joseph, because Phebe died at least forty years before, (around 1840) and George never even met his Grandmother Phebe.

The Daughters of the American Revolution Magazine: It was actually an inquiry of Jacob Bailey in the Revolutionary War, made by H.M.G. In it the author states, (paraphrased):
Jacob Bailey of Long Island.
He was a tanner and furnished leather for the soldiers.
His wife was Bathsheba Brush.
They moved to Delaware Co., N. Y.

Their children were:
1: Hannah, married . Beardsley
2: John, married Hannah Brush
3: Freelove, married William Teed
4: Phebe, married Amos Woolsey
5: Doshea, married Benjamin Barlow
6: Polly, married Aaron Gregory
7: Nancy, married John Briggs
—H. M. G.

It wasn't too difficult to attribute it to Helen Martha Gregory, a descendant of Jacob and Bathsheba Bailey through Aaron Gregory. In the inquiry there are about eleven assertions, and though we may never know if Jacob Bailey furnished leather for the soldiers, all of the rest of the statements have proven true. Except for a couple of partial first names, it has proven 100% accurate! Further since Jacob and Bathsheba had, in addition to their one son, six daughters, whose ancestral pedigree was lost to their descendants because of losing their maiden name, it has filled in a huge gap in the genealogical record!

Who is Helen Gregory? How did she learn this? Helen Martha Gregory (1859 -1927) (Find A Grave Memorial # 12784421), is the daughter of James Orlando Gregory, a granddaughter to Aaron and Mary Bailey Gregory and great granddaughter of Jacob Bailey also a first cousin to Joseph Woolsey (once removed). Helen was a College Professor and High School History Teacher for many years and a noted member of the DAR. In fact she was a trained historian and an avid genealogist who was researching well before 1903. Her accuracy, is undeniable, as all of the seven children are proven independently, with the correct spouses and descendants.

Still not sure? Then look at information in the Census Records.

In the 1800 Census in Stamford, Delaware, New York, we find Amos' father Daniel Woolsey. Also present are Amos' uncles, William and Nicholas Halstead. About fifteen miles away in Delhi (now Bovina) are Jacob Bailey, future father in law; Abijah Gregory (Helen's Great Grandfather), father of future brother-in-law, Aaron; Daniel Beardsley, future brother in-law, as well as other Beardsleys. There are no Briggs.

By the 1810 Census, Amos and brother, Richard, had moved to Delhi. Amos and Phebe's cabin (most are described as cabins) is almost surrounded by Phebe Bailey's family - at least nine households. Amos and Phebe are only two doors away from Mary Bailey, her sister, and her husband, Aaron Gregory's cabin, and are next door to Aaron's brother, Abijah. Her parents, Jacob and Bathsheba Bailey and other Bailey descendants are also nearby, so Phebe obviously enjoyed being close to her family. But in 1810 there was only one Briggs in Delhi, a Banks Briggs, (1786-1832), whose wife was Lovisa, with one boy under 10. Also, there is a Joshua Briggs (found as Brigs) in Kortright, who's son, John B. Briggs, later married Nancy Bailey (Phebe's sister).

The 1810 Delhi Census

Household #157 Abel Beardsley - Phebe's brother in law - Daniel Beardsley's brother (Daniel married Phebe's oldest sister Hannah).
Household #164 John O. Beardsley - Phebe's brother in law - Daniel Beardsley's brother.
Household #178 Joel Brush - Phebe's first cousin.
Household #179 Alexander Brush - Phebe's uncle: started Brushland, became, Bovina Center, his mother Bathsheba moved from Long Island, with him.
Household #181 John Bailey - Phebe's brother.
Household #182 Jacob Bailey - Phebe's father.
Household #212 Richard Wolsy - Amos' brother.
Household #220 Abijah Gregory - Aaron's brother.
Household #221 Amos Woolsy - Amos with 2 boys, 1 girl under 10 and Phebe.
Household #224 Aaron Gregory - Phebe's brother in law and her sister, Mary Bailey.
Household #259 William Hulsted - Amos' Uncle - Anna's brother.
Household #303 Ezra Bardsley - Husband of Phebe's first cousin, Nancy Brush.
Household #369 Banks Briggs - The only one, this Banks Briggs (1786-1832) had a wife, Lovisa, and 1 boy under 10.
Household #371 Joseph Tidd - Phebe's brother in law and her sister, Freelove Bailey.

How could the mistake have happened? Was the name of Briggs given, from memory? Did Joseph get confused with Phebe's sister, Nancy Baily Briggs? Even though his own sister, Bathsheba Woolsey Adams, was named after their Grandmother, Bathsheba Bailey? Maybe, since according the Joseph Woolsey bio, at about age 14 or in about 1823, he moved to Syracuse, and since his Aunt Nancy, had moved, by 1825, to Preble, Cortland County, just some 23 miles away (Nancy's daughter, Lucy was born in 1825 in Preble), he mixed up the names? Because Phebe and her sister would have kept in touch. It is quite probable that his Aunt Nancy would have traveled to Syracuse or Phebe to Preble, so the sisters could see each other and the families visit. Aunt Nancy likely attended Joseph's wedding on May 4, 1831. Then at about age 23 or 24, in 1833, Joseph moved to Illinois, and probably never saw his Aunt Nancy Bailey Briggs again. A few years later Phebe died. But the name stuck and over fifty years later, George repeated it for "The History of Greene and Jersey Counties, Illinois". Could Joseph or George have just been confused?

Compare the two possible ancestors, both from secondary sources....

For Phebe Briggs
Published in 1885
Statement made from memory?
Source: Secondary - George Woolsey?.
Researcher: None
Quality of the information: Unknown - no parents no ancestors.
Briggs in the Census? no possible Briggs

For Phebe Bailey
Published in 1903.
Statements made from research.
Source: Secondary - unknown, a family Bible and other documents?
Researcher: A trained historian and genealogist.
Quality of the information: Extremely accurate, proven with at least 110 ancestors and hundreds of descendants.
Baileys in the Census? Bailey family all around.

So, it boils down to two of Jacob and Bathsheba's Great Grandchildren, which one do you believe? With Joseph's son, the Woolsey Line is dead ended at a Phebe Briggs, who can't be found anywhere except for Joseph's biography. With Helen Gregory, the Woolsey Line no longer stops at Phebe, but goes on for generations, and at least 55 pairs of Great Grandparents, not to mention, thousands of new cousins! Though there is still much to research, many of the new Woolsey ancestors are well documented and interesting too, like the Brushes of Long Island, and names like Gildersleeve, Conklin, Platt and yes Sammis too. Many even attended, along with Amos Woolsey's ancestors, the First Church of Huntington, officiated by the well known, Rev. Ebenezer Prime. With Helen Gregory's research, I find over 140 (including Woolsey), of Jacob and Bathsheba Bailey's Great Grandchildren, who can now be reconnected to their ancestors.

The preponderance of evidence does indeed, suggest an alternative explanation - it's time to fix your lines!

Amos Woolsey married Phebe Bailey.

Sincerely,
Rick Bushong

Ancestor Sketches. Amos Woolsey 1783/4- 16 Sep 1869. by Raymond C. Adams. There is substantial circumstantial evidence to prove that Amos was the son of Daniel Woolsey (1755-1845) b Marlborouogh, NY, the son of Henry and Abigail Wright Woolsey.

Amos m (1st) Phoebe Bailey, 1806, Albany Co, NY. They are listed in the 1810 and 1820 census in Delaware Co, NY. From the biography of their son Joseph B. Woolsey, we learn that they moved to Onondaga County, NY in 1822.

Daniel's Revolutionary War Pension file tells us that in 1834 he moved to Trumbull Township, Ashtabula, OH. The census data is confusing but it appears that Phoebe was alive when the data was taken, probably before mid year. On 10 Dec 1840 Amos m (2nd) Eunice Sayles, a widow with three children. We assume Phoebe died but no record has been found of her birth or burial.

Amos died 16 Sep 1869 in Morgan County, IL. A quit claim deed entered 2 Jan 1871, reveals that six of his children with Phoebe were alive at that time. Other Woolsey researchers claim there were two other children. We assume they died before 1871. Amos had seven children with Eunice. He was age 72 when his last child was born.

Amos' grandmother (my g.g.g.g) Abigail Wright Woolsey was a most remarkable woman. In 1829 she accompanied her invalid daughter in a move by wagon to Ohio, where her daughter's husband, a Methodist minister, had gone ahead to prepare their home. Abigail was 98 years of age at the time. She did her own housework until within a week of her death at 99 plus.

Bathshebia Woolsey born August 22, 1808 married a George W. Adams born April 19, 1807, according to the Syracuse Register, married Sept 2, 1829. They both moved and settled in Kane, IL where they both died. She applied for pension from the civil war.

2002 February 1 reply from Wilford Whitaker to Paula Schwartz:

I have six Amos Woolseys in my database, but only one who is old enough to be the father of Bathshebia. I thought I had his family quite complete, but she would fit into the family of his first wife.

Amos H. Woolsey, b 1781 in Half Moon Town, Albany, New York, d 16 Sep 1869 in Morgan County, Illinois, [the son of Daniel Woolsey and Ann Halstead, of Ulster Co., NY,] md about 1806 to Phoebe Bailey. Amos H. Woolsey was md three times and had children into the 1840's. His third wife was Eunice _____, and I found her in the 1880 Census of Roodhouse, Greene Co., IL, living with her dau Phoebe A. Woolsey and Phoebe's husband George Tate.

It is quite possible that Bathshebia Woolsey is the d/o Amos H. Woolsey and his first wife Phoebe Bailey. If not, I don't know where to put her at this time.

Amos H. Woolsey moved his family from Albany County, NY to Delaware Co., NY and in 1822 he moved his family to Onondaga Co., NY. Does this sound promising?

Amos H. Woolsey and Phoebe Bailey had a large family and descendants of them are found in the 1880 Census of Greene County, IL. Grandsons, I believe.

Well, this should get you started on the right track, I hope! How do you connect to the Adams/Woolseys?

2003 Feb from Paula Schwartz to Wilford Whitaker:
I just checked your index of woolseys, do you by any chance have some documentation of Amos Woolsey, that you don"t probably remember that we spoke about a while back, from Onondaga,Onondaga, NY found in the 1830 census. When I plug in Amos on Ancestry he definitely is in the census, but how does one find proof of his say marriage and children. I have contacted the Onondaga Hist Soc for some enllightenment, but only the marriage of one said Bathsheba Woolsey married to a George W. Adams 1829 in the Onondaga Register. Thanks for you time, can look up something in northern OH at the Western Reserve Hist Library I know some people are looking into OH for some answers - Paula Schwartz
