        Israel Woolsey of town of Flatlands, Kings Co, NY – I resign my soul into the hands of Almighty God hoping and believing in a remission of my sins by the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ and my body I commit to the earth etc - 1st my just debts to be paid – Item: unto my beloved wife Catharine Woolsey all personal property etc – and all real estate etc while she remain my widow – Exor's to sell Dwelling House & lot of land in Tillary Street in Brooklyn – Item: as I have devised considerable estate to set him up in business to my son John Woolsey I do discharge him from all payments due to the estate, also further sum of $630 after my children & grandchildren have received their portions – Item: After my wife's decease, I give to my sons Henry Woolsey, Aaron Woolsey, Rulef Woolsey, my daus Annatie Duryee the widow of the late Garret Duryee deceased and my grandson William Henry Woolsey (to be held until age 21) the son of my deceased son Gilbert Woolsey all rest & residue of real & personal estate to be equally divided – wife Catharine Exo'r Israel Woolsey Wit: Jeremiah Lott of Flatbush, John J.         William G. Woolsey of City of Brooklyn, Kings Co, NY now being of sound mind & memory and also about to depart the said county & state under orders from the Navy Department of the US service to which I belong etc – it is my will that my wife Eleanor shall have the recourse of all my estate both real & personal during her natural life and at her decease to go to my children to be divided between them share & share alike – wife Eleanor my sole Executrix. William G. Woolsey - Wit: Asbury W. Kirk, Joseph Dean, both of Brooklyn. Proved: 12 Dec 1840 Eleanor Woolsey petitioned to have will proved and that Charles Gordon Woolsey, Mary Augusta Woolsey, Ellen Maria Woolsey, William Berry Woolsey are children of said dec'd and are minors that Nathan B. Morse be appointed Special Guardian etc – petition of Eleanor Woolsey of the 4
th Ward of Brooklyn shows that William G. Woolsey late of Brooklyn a Lieutenant in the Navy and in the actual service of the US departed this life at said City on 25 Oct last (1840) and left him surviving your petitioner his widow, and Charles Gordon Woolsey aged 8 years on 19 Nov last (1840), Mary Augusta Woolsey aged 5 years on 29 Sep last (1840), Ellen Maria Woolsey aged 3 years on 28 Aug last (1840), William Berry Woolsey age 1 year on 5 Oct last (1840), his only children etc. signed Eleanor Woolsey. Nathan B. Morse consents to be Special Guardian etc - Eleanor Woolsey says that she is the widow of William B. Woolsey, dec'd and that in the Spring of 1839 said dec'd handed to her the paper now produced etc and that he wished her to read it and she read it and put it away among the valuable papers of the said dec'd, that the said dec'd went to Sea in the service of the US in June following, etc. 12 Dec 1840. - Joseph Dean swore he was present and subscribed his name to said will – Asbury W.         Newell Woolsey of Williamsburgh, Kings Co, NY – of sound & disposing mind – Exo'r to pay just debts & funeral expenses & to sell all my bank insurance & other stock, my bonds notes due bills, and securities of any nature and to convert all my estate into money & to invest the sum of $6000 payable half yearly to my mother Letitia Woolsey during her natural life, on the death of my said mother to invest $1000 & interest there from to my sister Phebe Woolsey & at her death to the American Bible Society etc & on the death of my mother out of said sum of $6000 to my brother Ezra W. Woolsey $1000, if he die before my mother then to his children & at the death of my mother out of the $6000 to pay my uncle William S. Woolsey of Andover, Henry Co, ILL $500 - To Cornelia P Stevenson wife of Rev. P. E. Stevenson now of Wyoming Pennsylvania (or to her children if she be dead) $250 – To John D. Wells pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Williamsburg $250 – To the American Bible Society $500 - To the Presbyterian Board of Domestic Missions $1000 – To the American Colonization Society $250 – and to American Sunday School Union $250 to be used for the promotion of Sunday Schools at the West – At the death of my mother out of the $6000 pay to “The Trustees of the Presbyterian Church & Congregation of Williamsburgh” on Long Island (aforesaid) $1000 and invest it for the relief of poor members of said Church – To my sister Phebe Woolsey all my right to farm in Huntington, Long Island formerly owned by my grandfather John Woolsey and now occupied by my mother or in event of death of Phebe to my brother Ezra W. – to my sister Phebe the further sum of $800 – To my brother Ezra W. Woolsey the use of $2000 then to his children etc – As my brother John is in pecuniary circumstances above the necessity of aid from me I do not consider it my duty to leave any share of my property to him but I give to him as tokens of my remembrance my ivory headed cane and my double barreled gun with all fixtures belonging to it – I give to Cornelia P. Stevenson (wife of Rev. P. E. Stevenson) $1000 then to her children – To John D. Wells of Williamsburgh Pastor of the Presbyterian Church $1000 & invest to educate for the ministry his son Newell Woolsey Wells if expedient – To my uncle William S. Woolsey of Andover, Illinois $500 – to my cousin Henry R. Prime $100 & to my friend Charles N. Shepard of Brooklyn $50 – To Jarvis R. Rolph of Huntington, Long Island in trust for Keziah Smith widow near Huntington $50 – To my brother Ezra W. Woolsey all my books, apparel, small items, etc – balance to my mother Letitia Woolsey, my sister Phebe Woolsey, my brother Ezra W. Woolsey and Cornelia P. Stevenson wife of P. E. Stevenson in proportions: Mother Letitia 1/3, Phebe ¼, Ezra W. ¼, Cornelia 1/6 part – If estate insufficient for these legacies, the $6000 for my mother to be strictly applied and other legacies decreased, etc – I appoint Abijah P. Woolsey of Brooklyn, Kings Co, NY being of sound mind and memory but sensible of the uncertainty of this mortal life – Exo'rs to pay all just debts & funeral expenses – I appoint my son-in-law Edward McGarvey & my friends Ezra B. Tuttle & George B Germond all of Brooklyn as Exo'rs – I give unto my said son-in-law Edward McGarvey the use & occupation of the premises No 167 Grand St in Brooklyn, Eastern District, for the time of 2 years after my decease, that he pay taxes & water rates & keep up premises, etc – To my grand daughter Frances Woolsey McGarvey, the child of my deceased dau Frances Woolsey McGarvey the premises now used as a carpet store on NE side of Grand St bet 4
th & 5th St in East. Dist. of Brooklyn & known by the street No. 167 etc subject to use of the same by my said son-in-law Edward McGarvey – I give to my said grand daughter Frances Woolsey McGarvey the house, store & premises on N side of Broadway in E. D. of Brooklyn, lately purchased by me from Rudolph Reiner & known by No. 325 – Exo'rs to sell balance – to my said grand daughter $20000 during her minority to be invested and applied for her use & benefit – I direct my exo'rs to hold out $5000 from my personal estate & pay interest to Mrs. Atkinson, the mother of my former deceased wife, and in like manner to hold out $1000 to pay income semi-annually to Phoebe Sackett the d/o of George and Eunice Armstrong – to my son-in-law Edward McGarvey $10000, also to Asa Thompson the son of William and Catharine Thompson of Ancram, Columbia Co, NY $2500 , also to Hannah Thompson Finch d/o said William & Catharine Thompson $2500, also to Francis Madden on account of his faithful service $1000 – I give to said son-in-law Edward McGarvey all my household furniture – if granddaughter dies all to go to Edward McGarvey with $500 additional to Francis Madden – In the event of death of said grand daughter without heirs surviving her I bequeath to my nephew Samuel W. Backus of California, the son of Gurdon Backus and my deceased sister Julia Ann Backus the sum of $10000 – any surplus to be divided equally between beneficiaries – Exo'rs to take a sum not exceeding $14000 bequeathed to my said grand daughter and to apply the same towards the erection of a new store and dwelling house upon the premises on Broadway, Brooklyn E.D. etc - Samuel W.
