These two small villages formed part of the Parish of Kingsclere until 1852. The Manor of Ecchinswell, sometimes also called the Manor of Nuthanger, formed part of the original endowment of the See of Winchester. It remained part of the Bishopric until 1648 when, as a result of the Root and Brancti Act, it was sold to Nicholas Love and George Wither. In 1660 it returned to the Bishop and continued to be held until the mid eighteenth century. The lordship was soon afterwards acquired by the Herbert family. Sydmonton manor formed part of the original endowment of the Abbey of Romsey and continued in its possession until dissolution in 1539. The following year Henry VIII granted it to John Kingsmill of Whitchurch. The manor remained in the hands of the Kingsmill, passing in 1766 to Elizabeth Brice. Her husband took the name of Kingsmill by Act of Parliament but died without issue in 1805. He left the property to the Reverend John Stephens, Vicar of Chawton Mendip and he also assumed the surname and arms of Kingsmill. The manor continued to be held by this family. The chalk grassland of Watership Down attracted Richard Adams to write his Best-selling novel featuring the rabbit population of the area. Burghclere, other pages list attractions to discover area, and other interesting
villages to visit. The prehistoric occupation of Burghelere is indicated
by several flint implements and other carchaelogical remains that have
been found. The documented history of Burgclere includes several very
early grants of land at Clere to the church in Winchester. The Doomsday
Survey mentions a church at Burgclere, and lands at Clere (possibly Burghclere
combined with Highclere) are described as being held by the Bishop for
the monks at Winchester. The now deserted mediaeval village of Old Burgclere
can only 'be seen as irregularities in the ground as most traces have
been destroyed by ploughing. The village had its own church, and the manor
house was a good example of an early Fourteenth century aisled hall building.
The mediaeval Hospital of St. Cross is tbougbt to have stood on the main
Wincheqter to Oxford road, although the exact site is not known. The twelfth
century church of All Saints at Old Burghclere was restored in 1861 but
has kept many twelfths and thirteen-century features. The manor of Burghclere
remained in possession of the See of Winchester until 1551, when Edward
IV received it in exchange for other lands It was granted to William FitzWilliam
and remained in tbis family until acquired by Richard Kingsmill in 1577,
after which it passed by descent to the Lucys. In 1671 the manor was conveyed
to Sir Robert Sawyer and thereafter descended through his daughter to
the Earl of Pembroke Burgbciere was a quiet village admired by Dean Field,
Chaplain to Elizabeth I and rector here at the end of his life. It now
has a twentieth century shrine, the Oratory of All Souls, also known as
the Sandham Memorial Chapel containing Frescoes of First World War scenes

THESE "Articles" refer to the Irish Natives, who were to be admitted to be Freeholders: "They shall have Estates in Fee-Farm." "They shall pay the yearly Rent of two pounds, thirteen shillings four pence for every Portion of a thousand Acres, and so rateably for greater Proportion, which is after the rate of thirteen shillings and four pence for every sixty Acres, or thereabouts, and they shall pay no rent for the first year."* "For their Tenures, they shall hold as the other Undertakers respectively, according to their Portions, with a Proviso of forfeiture of their estates, if they enter into actual rebellion. "They shall inhabit their Lands, and build their Castles, Houses, Bawnes, within two years, as the former Undertakers."5. "They shall make certain estates (or Leases) for Years, or for Lives, to their Under-Tenants, and they shall take no Irish exactions."*2 6. "They shall use Tillage and Husbandry after the manner of the English Pale."*3 * First Year: The few native undertakers do not appear to have made any objection to the payment of a so much larger rent than had been laid on the others; but they complained at being obliged to commence paying so soon, to erect their buildings in so short a time, and to relinquish their long-cherished and much-loved custom of creaghting (or "living by cattle"). *2 Irish Exactions: Like the Land System of the Hebrews, the Gaelic System, which obtained among the Gaels in Ireland, down to the seventeenth century, allotted a portion of land to each head of a family, for the sustenance of himself and those dependent on him; and each head of a family rendered towards the maintenance and dignity of the Chief of the Clan certain duties or "chief-rents," which were not, however, identical with the word rent, as now understood between landlord and tenant; for the Irish Chieftain was not the owner of the land, he was merely the head and protector of his Clan. The "extractions" above mentioned were, AD 1613, abolished in Ireland, in the reign of King James I., by the Parliament then held in Dublin, by the Lord Deputy, Sir Arthur Chichester. *3 English Pale: This meant that the Irish who were to be admitted as Freeholders in the Ulster Plantation, were to turn their attention in a greater degree to cropping the lands, abandoning their own system of almost universal grazing and creaghting. IV. GENERAL PROPOSITIONS. THESE "Propositions" were to be notified to the Undertakers of all sorts: 1. "There shall be Commissioners appointed for the setting forth of the several Proportions; and for the ordering and setting of the Plantation, according to such instructions as shall be given unto them by his Majesty in that behalf." 2. "That all the said Undertakers shall by themselves, or by such as the States of England or Ireland shall allow of, attend the said Commissioners in Ireland, at or before Midsummer next, to receive such Directions touching their Plantations as shall be thought fit."' 3. "That every Undertaker, before the ensealing of his Letters Patent, shall enter into Bond and Recognizance, with good Sureties, to his Majesty's use, in the Office of his Majesty's Chief Remembrancer, in England or Ireland; or in his Majesty's Exchequer, or Chancery, in Scotland or else before two of the Commissioners to be appointed for the Plantation, to perform the aforesaid Articles, according to their Several Distinctions, of Building, Planting, Residence, Alienation within five years, and making of certain estates (or leases) to their Tenants in this manner viz.; the Undertaker of the greatest Proportion to become bound in four hundred Pounds; of the middle Proportion, in three hundred Polinds; and of the least Proportion, in two hundred Pounds." 4. "That in every of the said Counties there shall be a convenient number of Market Towns and Corporations erected for the Habitation and settling of Tradesmen and Artificers; and that there shall be one free School, at least, appointed in every County for the education of youth in Learning and Religion." 5. "That there shall be a convenient number of Parishes and Parish Churches with sufficient Incumbents, in every County; and that the Parishioners shall pay ail their Tithes in kind to the Incumbents of the said Parish Churches. See Harris's 'Hibernica', pp. 123-130. Of the 'Ulster Plantation' Hill says: "The undertakers would have neither act nor part in the plantation if required to hold their lands by oppressive feudal tenure of Knight's service, and they were consequently released therefrom; but the benefit which they thus secured for themselves they were obliged to share with their tenants, by letting their lands on the most liberal terms-- some in fee-farm, some by long leases, and none for shorter terms than twenty-one years. The division and allotment of the lands, therefore, were not made merely that the undertakers, who had been generally needy men, should become wealthy at the expense of their tenants; nor were the latter brought here (to Ireland) to live simply as feudal serfs, reclaiming the soil in which they had no permanent right or interest. On the contrary, all these Conditions and Articles imply a mutual interest between the undertakers and the settlers on their estates, and are now of extreme importance as explanatory of the scope and purpose of the grants then made by the Crown." GRANTS AND GRANTEES. EVERY undertaker's lands were erected, by the terms of his grant, into a Manor, with certain manorial rights and privileges; including at first the power of establishing Courts Baron, and of enclosing a certain number of acres as a demesne, according to the size, in each case of the proportion held by the undertaker. In this instance, the term demesne (from the Latin de mainsione) properly denotes that part of the estate attached to the Mansion, where the proprietor remains or resides. Other privileges were soon afterwards added, the most useful of which was that of appointing fairs and markets in all places where these institutions were required. The several grants only recite the names of the leading divisions of land in each proportion or estate. Each of those divisions, however, included several smaller parcels, which more correctly represent the numbers of our present townlands. The Farquharsons having moved onto their deeside inheritance became vassals of the Earldom of Mar In the early 17th century they were able to purchase feu charters to their lands and after the attainder of the Earl of Mar who led the Jacobite rising of 1715 they held these directly of the Crown. To day [1996] the castle of Braemar, which was built in 1628 by James Erskin, Earl of Mar, is owned by Capt. Alwyne A C Farquharson. Clan Farquharson were among the most loyal to the House of Stewart. They fought under Montrose in 1644 and formed part of the Scottish army under Charles 11 at Worcester in 1651. They joined forces under the Viscount of Dundee in 1689 for James V11. At the outbreak of rebellion in 1715 against the Act of union they were the first to muster at the summons of the Earl of Mar in the cause of James V111. At this time John Farquharson of Ivercauld with 4 officers and 140 men joined the Clan Chattan, accompanying it to England. The Farquharson's marched out of Preston to Ribble-bridge to attack the English Army. At another battle of Sheriffmuir the Scots were defeated at Preston and John Farquharson was taken prisoner and held in the prison in London for 10 mo. John Farquarson of Invercauld,9th Chief died in 1750 and was succeeded by his son James, 10th Chief, a Capt. of foot in the Hanoverian Army, who died in 1805. His only surviving child Catherine, by virtue of the Lyon Court decree,1815,assigning the chief arms and supporters was head of the ventral or Stem family of Farquharson of Invercauld and so was chief of the clan. She married Capt. James Ross, Royal Navy, who took the name Farquharson. She was succeeded by her son, James, who was succeeded by Alexander Haldane Farquharson of Invercauld, who died in 1936. His daughter Mrs. Myrtle Farquharson of Invercauld was confirmed chief by Lyon Court degree on Dec 3,1936. She was killed in an air raid in 1940. The succession then passed to her Nephew the present and 16 Th Chief of the Clan Farquharson. [1996] Capt. Alwyne Arthur Compton Farquharson of Invercauld was by Lyon Court in 1949 confirmed MacFionnlaidh. He served with distinction as a Capt. in the Royal Scots Greys during WW 11. He resides at Invercauld Castle in Braemar on Royal Deeside. The Farquharson estate covers about 200,000 acres of forest and moor in the Grampian region in Aberdeenshire. Clan Farquharson, of Celtic origin, derives from
Farquhar, 4th son of Alexander Ciar, 3rd Shaw of Rothiemurchus. A grant
of arms made by Lord Lyon in 1697 stated that John Farquharson of Invercauld
was lawfully descended of Shaw son of MacDuff. Thane of Fife whose successors
had the name Shaw until Farquhar Shaw, son of Shaw of Rothiemerchus,
Chief of the whole name came to be called Farquharson. Thus the Farquharsons
branched from Clan Shaw. Farquhar, who lived in the reign of James 111,
settled in the Braes of Mar and was appointed Baillie or hereditary
Chamberlain there of. It was Donald Farquharson, 4th Chief, who married
Isobel Stewart, heiress of Invercauld and their son Finlay Mor[B about
1487] 1st of the house of Farquharson of Invercauld, and 5th Chief who
gave to the Farquharson Chiefs their style MacFionnlaidh [Siol Fhionnlaidh
or descendants of Finlay] At the age of 60, Finlay Mor accompanied the
Earl of Huntly to the battle of Pinkie in 1547. As the army descended
toward the sea he was killed by a cannon ball fired from an enemy ship.
His body lies interred in the churchyard of Inveresk. The place is still
known as the "Lang Highlandman's grave." His Widow Beatrix Garden also
has a claim to remembrance having been an outstanding performer on the
little harp or Clasach. Queen Mary presented one of these instruments
to her and this harp is now preserved in the National Museum of Antiquities JOHN KINGSMILL FINLAY and ELIZA JANE BROWN TWIN had the following children: 81 i. He was killed by suffocation by steam in a train wreck in Pittsburgh. The train he was on was hit from behind by another train, at a station stop and Willie and 40 other people were killed and many injured on 11 Oct 1880 I have a copy of the Newspaper account of the accident in my file. 82 ii. Margaret Kingsmill FINLEY was born on December 1, 1865 in Kittanning, Armstrong, PA. She was christened in St. PaulŐs EPS Church Kittanning PA. She died on June 15, 1956 in Grants Pass, Oregon Unmarried. She was buried in 1956 in Grants Pass Oregon Granit Hills Cemetery. In the Kittanning Times on June 17,1881 she is recorded as in the roll of honor as a student who passed the final examination with a percent of 95 or better. She was a schoolteacher in Kittanning and Pittsburgh PA. Teaching English, French, German, and Sign for the deaf. She studied French and German while Teaching English and sign in Germany in the late 1890s. She met the Kaiser on the way home and set a letter to her sister Elizabeth about the experience. I have a copy of the letter. A stop in Ireland to see her aunts in Rathdowney, Queens, Ireland and visit the home of her Grandparents, the Kingsmill Mansion Described as a 40 bedroom home, with a Deer Park and a lake in about 1900. [Location not given]. She moved to Grants Pass Oregon after retiring to be with her sister Elizabeth, and died there some years later. She is buried in Grants Pass next to her sister. 83 iii. Grants Pass Oregon Granit Hills Cemetery. Her RELATION is Grandmother of William M Worth A 6ft tall woman She had the only Grandchild of John
K Finley and Eliza Brown. She learned Sign language early as 4 of her
Brothers and Sisters were deaf mutes. She in turn taught it most places
she went around the country. She was a housemother at Elmcrest childrenŐs
home in Syracuse, Onondaga, NY She traveled all over the US and had friends
everywhere. Born and raised in the Eps faith she was a devout Christian
and very proud of her Irish Ancestry on both sides of her family. I have
a picture, among many of this lady at age 80 on a quarter horse in Arizona.
In the Kittanning Times June 17 1881 she is recorded in the Roll of Honor
as a student who in the final examination reached a percentage of 95 and
upwards, Lizzie as she was called often throughout her life was in room
