McCutcheon and Related Families of (West) Virginia

It's possible that brothers Robert "Rob", Samuel, William, and James M McCutcheon came from either Northern Ireland or Scotland to Virginia.  Our Family's Book of Books by Louise Dale Ray Jones; Jasper, GA. Pub 1984. Book IV, Chapter I, Page 326 says, About 1728, Robert McCutchen and his brothers came to the Colonies from Glasgow, Scotland.

The relationship of the brothers is based on the will of William McCutcheon filed 7 July 1789 in Rockbridge County, VA.  The will  names wife Janet and four brothers: James, Robert, John and Samuel   Witnesses to the will were Samuel, John and Captain William McCutchen.  Relationship of Captain William is unknown; he may be one of the Williams who were nephews.  James, Robert and Samuel all had sons named William.

 It is said that Samuel McCutcheon died on 28 July 1828 in Augusta County, Virginia and that he married Elizabeth Fulton.  Both he and Elizabeth are said to be buried in the North Mountain Burying Ground in Augusta Virginia.  Their children are said to be James, John, Sarah, William, Elizabeth, Margaret, Elinor, Margaret, Samuel, Jane, Frances, and James born between 1757 and 1775 in Augusta County, Virginia.

It is said that James McCutcheon married Griselda Campbell.  Their children are said to be John who served in the Revolutionary War and married Elizabeth Weir of Rockbridge County; later moved to Tennessee or North Caroline; Elizabeth married James Berry; Sarah married Alexander McNutt; William McCutcheon; Patrick married Hannah Marshall; James M; Samuel; and Margaret.

Robert "Rob" McCutcheon died with a will dated 23 August 1800 which names the following:  To daughter, Mary; to son, James; son, Robert; son, Jones, land on Little River; daughter, Hanna Henderson; daughter, Margaret Moore (son John?); other children. The following information is gathered from a variety of sources about the children of Robert McCutcheon and has not been personally documented:

Agnes McCutcheon Baptism: November 16, 1748, by Rev. John Craig;

John McCutcheon born 13 Aug 1750 died 7 April 1842 Augusta County, VA.  He married Elizabeth Hodge.  Their children were Samuel, Margaret m. Robert Jameson, Robert, Eleanor m. John McClung, Joseph, John Jr., William m. Rebecca McKnight,  Elizabeth m. William Wilson and James.

Sarah McCutcheon married John McClung; John McClung II, a son of John and Rebecca (Stewart) McClung, was born in Rockbridge County VA and died in Bath County VA in
September 1832.

Jane McCutcheon m. John Meek 15 June 1770.  She died October 1827 in Knox County, TN;

Joseph R McCutcheon married 1st to Jane King and 2nd to Nancy Youel.  After married, he moved to Georga and died 13 December 1825 in Hall County, GA;

Margaret McCutcheon married David Moore;

William McCutcheon born 11 March 1760 in Augusta Count, VA He married first to Margaret Kennedy and 2nd to Ann Shaw. It is said he received a tract of land in Georgia as a Revolutionary War soldier.  He died 22 Oct 1827 Henry County, GA and is buried at the Moran Cemetery in Spalding County., Georgia;

James McCutcheon  was born about 1765 at his father's place on the Little River of the Calfpasture in Augusta Co., Va. In the 1850 Census of Nicholas Co., Va. Now W. Va. he was living in the household of John Deitz and was 85 years old. He probably died there in 1852, as there is a deed in Nicholas co. dated 14 Oct. 1852 in which his son, William, conveyed land "formerly owned by James McCutchen to John Deitz. DB 10. p. 75. James was a soldier of the Revolution. He received two grants of land from the Governor of Georgia in May of 1790--one for 200 acres, and the other for 287 and half acres in Franklin Co., Ga. this county was created on 1784 frp, ;lands ceded by the Cherokees and the Creeks and was given as bounty grants to Revolutionary War soldiers. At this time the State of Georgia was encouraging people from outside the state to settle there, and there was a peculiar policy of "adopting" those veterans who moved into the state after the war, a result of which was that these soldiers were listed in the records as Georgia veterans. It is there fore assumed that James went to Georgia shortly after the end of the war--his brothers, Joseph and William did the same. There is a deed in Georgia showing a conveyance of land to James by Isreal Smith in 1784 (Historical Collections of the Georgia Chapter of the DAR 1926, on a list of "Bounty Grants for Revolutionary service.) James returned home to Virginia about 1789. Rockbridge County, Virginia records show that he married Sally Coursey, daughter of James Coursey, on 2 June 1789. Her sister, Frances, married James' brother, Robert, a few months later. It is thought that the two couples then went to Georgia, although there is a Chalkley reference showing James and Robert on an Augusta County delinquent tax list in 1790, with the notation that they had gone to the French Broad. Robert & Frances' son Robert III was born in GA. On 3 Aug. 1795 James sold his 200 acre tract in Franklin Co. The deed is now in Jackson Co. in Deed Book A & B and was recorded 4/10/1797. The deed mentioned a plat annexed to a grant in the name of James McCutchen signed by Governor Edward Telfair, dated 21 May 1790. There is evidence that James, Robert, and Frances returned to Virginia shorly thereafter, their names appearing on tax rolls and census records in Virginia. It is not known what happened to James' wife, Sally, or whether or not they had children. Tax rolls show that James was again living in August County from 1796 to 1798. On 17 June 1799 James married Catherine McClung, daughter of William and Abigail McClung in Greenbrier Co., Va now W. Va. A few months later, James' brother , Jones, married Catherine's sister Mary McClung. James and Catherine settled on some of the vast acreage of land William McClung had acquired in the "meadows" of Greenbrier County., about 20 miles northwest of Lewisburg, W. Va. In 1822 Wm. McClung conveyed two tracts of land to James McCutcheon. The first was for 500 acres in Greenbrier Co. on Otter Creek. The second tract contained 400 acres and was located in Nicholas County, VA. Catherine was still living in 1828, when she and James sold 100 acres of land in Greenbrier Co. DB 11, p 242, but she had died by the time her father made his will in 1832. She was in the 1830 census of Greenbrier County, VA
