The Wyatt Family in Garden Grove, Orange County, California 1953-1978 Orange County In the 50's and 60's, Mom and Dad moved here so Dad could work in the aerospace industry, which was at its peak. There were actually orange groves in between the small communities of the county. In 1954, Disneyland openedand Knott's Berry Farm followed and changed the major industry to tourism. We ad the beach, the mountains and the deserts and the weather was good. Grandma's house was close enough to visit often and we could walk to school. It was the Baby Boom. Disneyland & Knotts Berry Farm Most kids grow up with no theme parks in their backyard; we grew up on Disney. Trips there were terribly exciting, and rare, even though we lived close. Dad would dole out our 'A' through 'E' lettered tickets as each of us got on the rides. We kids would scramble all over Tom Sawyer's Island and dream about staying there after everyone else had gone home! besides Disneyland, there were Disney movies and Mickey Mouse Club, which we watched at 5pm with our bowls of apples and carrot slices, while Mom made dinner. 12391 Marilyn Circle Garden Grove, California Lehigh 9-5127 Our Toy Stories Dad bought us every Whamo! toy you could think of, taught us to play chess and we had great Christmases. Mom had so many toys to deal with, as well as kids, that she invented the Toy Closet. We had to deposit one in before getting another out. She also invented the Rainy Day Box. The best toys and games though, were the one we made and, made up ourselves. Why a Tire? Find Out! Family Stories Send me your stories, just whenever you think of them! We'll be surprised what we remember. Scouts Need I say more...? Well, yes, both Mom and Dad were leaders of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownies and Girl Scouts. Dad's troop was at Brookhurst School and grew quite large while he was Scoutmaster. Grandma & Grandpa Camping This was our family vacation...,rarely did we stay in motels with 6 in the family. We took yearly trips to Yosemite or Sequoia, a big trip to Canada and one to Colorado, traveling in our big Cadillac convertibles. Mom had several scarves for us girls in case of wind. One time, he little kids stayed home for some reason and we drove up to Oregon in Dad's little Fiat. Ken and I had to sit face to face on the 'package shelf. The beach was a popular camp spot and of course, there was the backyard. Motorcycles When Jim was in High School, Dad bought him a Honda 90. Mom was so afraid that someone would get hurt, but everyone took to the idea so much, that Dad bought himself a BMW. He and Mom enjoyed being 'in the wind', and Carmel became one of their favorite rides. They all joined the So. Cal. BMW Club and Dad was the President one year. Ken and Sheila bought a BMW, too and they'd all go on family rides. The Fiesta Rally was a big event, occuring in Mariposa in the Spring every year.
