Notes:

Until recently this had been the only death notice I'd found for our family historian, Richard Wynkoop, of Brooklyn, New York. I'm now able to say that there was a brief obituary published for him at the same time, and in the same paper, but which doesn't even come close, in my estimation, to a fitting tribute for the man who gave so much of his time and effort to the Wynkoop family. You can find this new obituary at Obituary Notes, Richard Wynkoop.

And no, the portrait did not accompany the notice. I haven't had access to the Brooklyn papers for this time period so I don't know if there is something more substantial in their pages, but if this is an example of how his son, Hubert Schuurman Wynkoop, treated his father in his later years, I am shocked and saddened. The man who spent from 1849 to at least 1906 chronicling the family's history deserves better than this.

In many ways the Wynkoop Family Research Library is a tribute to his interest and dedication, starting, as it did, as a home for his 1904 edition of Wynkoop Genealogy in the United States of America. It was my first effort at HTML and family history in general and from that small seed, (just three webpages really; the index, the genealogy page and the 1904 edition), it has grown to over 1500 webpages covering many, many aspects of family history from the mid 17th century into the early years of the 21st.

Many of these same sources were first dicovered by Richard Wynkoop, and I have pursued them zealously over the years, uncovering new material along the way that I'm sure he would have enjoyed reading. His own work was monumental and deserves a better memorial than this.

If you know of any other death notices or obituaries for Richard Wynkoop, I would appreciate it if you would contact me at [email protected]. I would love to hear about it, and if possible, post it here to correct the injustice that has been done to his memory.

    All my best,

    Chris
