A Drunken Woman's Freak Affords a
Text for a Temperance Talker.

There was quite a sensation at a temperance celebration at the Western Presbyterian Church on Sunday night. While the pastor, Rev. Dr. Wynkoop, was invoking a blessing upon the congregation, which was quite large, a woman sitting in one of the front pews created a commotion by talking in a tone that was audible throughout the house. One of the elders stepped over and requested her to be quiet. Everybody looked at her. She was plainly dressed and had her hat set forward on her head in a manner decidedly comical. She kept quiet during the song following the prayer, but when Rev. Mr. Wynkoop, in the course of a temperance talk, alluded to the deplorable fact that liquor in enormous quantities was being exported from America to heathen countries, the woman raised her arms wildly and shouted: "I drank liquor myself. I'll bet you fifty dollars. I've got it right here in my pocket, too."
The elder this time commanded her to be still, and an usher was dispatched for a policeman. The attention of the entire audience had been diverted from the address to the strange woman, who, from the excitement of the outburst, swayed back and forth, and kept muttering something unintelligible. The congregation was puzzled to know whether she was drunk or crazy.
The policeman could not be found, but presently an usher, bolder than the rest, took the woman by the arm and escorted her out. She offered no resistance.
She was a poor, miserable outcast, half-crazed from drink, who had drifted from the street into the church. The services proceeded with greater fervor than before, and the incident furnished a text for the temperance orator next on the programme.
