                                                                        AUGUSTA, Ill., October 3.
To the Editor of the Herald.
We promised some time ago to send you items occasionally. We shall endeavor to give the news as we hear it, and will gladly rectify all mistakes we may make.
There is at present a great excitement over the scarlet fever. Thus far six cases have been reported.
Died, at the residence of his father, in this city, of consumption, on Monday, October 1, at 7 p. m., Benjamin, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Young. Ben was a young man, just in the prime of life, and was beloved and respected by all who knew him. The funeral took place from the Chrisitan church yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock, Rev. T. W. Callingham officiating.
A child of Sameul Jones died of cholera infantum, and was buried at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.
A child of John Bramin is not expected to live through the night, it has scarlet fever.
The farmers all rejoice over the nice rain which fell on Monday evening.
    J. D. Hess will take possession of his new house in a short time. The carpenters and plasterers are doing their work.
Miss Ada Garner, of West Point, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Autrine.
The work on our new post office building is being pushed rapidly as possible. The old office building has been moved out on Main street but will be used as an office until the new building is completed.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wynkoop on the 1st inst., a fine 12 pound boy; also to Mr. and Mrs. R. Jones another 12-pound boy on Sunday. All parties doing well.
Mr. Lindell, of Bowen, is boring a well for the city roller mills. He has bored now to a depth of 150 feet, and found no water. He is now boring through rock.
    A. Whetstone has rented his room joining the Republican office and Dorsey's store for a baker.
The next great enterprise in August will be a pottery. Two men from Macomb have been here the past week soliciting stock. They will commence work as soon as possible.
