TAFT'S GUARDS CAUSE ROW

Citizens Clash Over Proposal of
Thanks for Police Transfer.
_______

Resolution Expressing Appreciation to
Mr. Burleson, Who Sought Change at
White House, Is Blocked.
_______

A resolution to extend the thanks of the East Washington Citizens' Association to Representative Burleson, of Texas, for his aid in the transfer of the policemen on duty at the White House to street duty caused a lively five minutes last night at a meeting of the organization at 3[unreadable] Pennsylvania avenue southeast. Charles A. Shields, who proposed the resolution, said he did not believe it is the duty of the District to furnish a guard for the President.
"Representative Burleson," said M. I. Weller, who led the attack on the proposal, "deserves no thanks from this association. If too many men have been detailed to the White House in the past and he has caused their removal, he has done only his duty."
The resolution finally was referred to the executive committee of the association for action.
The following committees were appointed at the meeting:
Committee on Anacostia flats--Thomas W. Smith, chairman; M. I. Weller, John Weedon, Sidney Bieber, H. K. Simpson, and George B. Blandford.
