Montgomery Ex-Sheriff Is
Seriously Injured at
Silver Spring.

    One man was killed and five persons were injured in traffic crashes in and near the District yesterday. The one death brought the year's toll to 97, six above that at the same time last year.
    Edward J. King, 3412 Tenth street northeast, 75 years old and half blind, was killed by a hit-run car while he was leading his blind wife across Tenth street near Lawrence street northeast. Mrs. King, 55, received a broken leg and lacerations.
    Two men were knocked from a motorcycle they were riding when it collided with a machine operated by Detective Sergt. Hugh Robey at Ninth and F streets northwest.
    Joseph L. Edwards, 28, 404 Sixth street northwest, passenger on the motorcycle operated by Frank G. Wynekoop, 22, of the Sixth street address, received a concussion of the brain. Wynekoop suffered cuts and bruises. Both men were treated at Emergency Hospital.
    George E. Nicholson, 71, of Olney, Md., former Montgomery County sheriff, was seriously injured in a three-way collision on Georgia avenue in Woodside, Md. Leroy Ayers, of Silver Spring, driver of one car, was arrested on a charge of reckless driving by Montgomery County police.
    Police said Ayers attempted to pass the car of Ernest L. Scott, colored, of Forest Glenn, Md.
    Scott swerved to avoid being struck and his car crashed into the automobile operated by Nicholson. Ayers, after treatment for injuries to his right knee, pleaded not guilty to the charge of reckless driving in a hearing before Justice of the Peace A. L. Briggs.
    Nicholson was taken to Montgomery County Hospital with serious injuries of his head.
    Bertha Grover, colored, 32, 605 Gordon avenue northeast, was hurt seriously when struck by a car at First and M streets southeast. At Gallinger Hospital she was said to have received fractured ribs, internal injuries and possible fracture of the right thigh.
    Police charged Cecil N. Evans, 26, 222 Second street northeast, driver of the car, with having a bad hand brake.
