Departure of Governor Steele.
_____
Gov. R. W. Steele took his departure from this city for the States on Tuesday morning last. As chief executive of this Territory we cannot do less than say he has performed the duties of his position promptly, intelligently, and to the satisfaction of all. He takes with him the best wishes of the entire Territory for a safe, agreeable journey and a speedy return.
A pleasing incident happened during the performance of "Skatara, or the Mountain Chieftain," on Wednesday evening last, which in this connection we will take occasion to note:--Mr. George Wynkoop, who enacted the part of the Governor of Jefferson Territory, with the other amatures, [sic] were severally called before the curtain. We will give, as near as we can remember, the address of Mr. W.:--
"Ladies and Gentlemen -- I cannot imagine why you have called me before you, unless it is to arraign me for gross misdemeanor so attempting to personate the Governor of the great State of Jefferson. I will take it otherwise, however, and regard it as a compliment to the respected gentleman, who, in reality, occupies that position. The State of Jefferson, Ladies and gentlemen, has commenced its career under most favorable auspices. Hope with me, then, that its future history and succeeding Governors may be as bright, glorious, and true as STEELE!"
