Death of Col. F. M. Wynkoop.

TAMAQUA, Dec. 14.--Col. Francis M. Wynkoop, late United States Marshal for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, was accidentally killed while gunning near this place, yesterday. He was hunting pheasants, in company with his hired man, when the gun in the hands of the latter was accidentally discharged. The load took effect in Col. W's leg, and he died in half an hour from the effects of the wound.
The deceased was about 38 years of age. He was born near Newton, Bucks county. On the breaking out of the Mexican war he joined the 1st Pa. Regiment of Volunteers, and on the arrival of the Regiment at Pittsburg, he was elected Colonel. Col. W. served with much distinction during the war. Gen. Pierce subsequently appointed him United States Marshal for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, an office he filled until the commencement of the administration of President Buchanan.
After the retirement of Col. W. from office, he went to live upon a farm belonging to him in Schuylkill county.--He was, at the time of his death, President of Valencia Coal Company.
Col. Wynkoop married a daughter of Major Twiggs, who fell gallantly in Mexico.
Point to rightWe knew the deceased well--knew how generous was his heart, how noble his soul,--and therefore deeply sympathize with his more immediate friends in their melancholy bereavement. They have almost overpowering cause for sorrow--may they bear it resignedly.
